I just use what the manufacturer recommends. If they just recommend a specific weight then use any oil that meets those specs. I have no loyalties to any particular oil brand...it simply won't make a damned bit of difference.

Got into a discussion with a guy at work today and he thinks Mobil 1 is the best where i believe RP is. Which is the best?

RP is good oil but not a lot of stores carry it which means you need to buy it online or go out of your way to use it. At one point I was using RIP in all my cars. Now days I just use Mobile 1 because I can buy it literally anywhere, I even see it at my grocery store in the "odds and ends" isle.

I mostly agree. If your engine is not abused and is maintained you should never need to use a weight other than what your manufacturer recommends.

Most manufacturers have two service schedules for their cars, a normal service and a severe service. I live in a region that normal driving is considered severe service due to the climate. Studies have shown that for severe service synthetic oils to make a difference in engine wear, so I use them.

Agreed. Around here walmart carries it. 7.99 a quart is pricey but better then autozone's 8.79/qt

I used RP for 2 oil changes and just went back to Mobil 1. I change my oil earlier than it needs to be so I don't need to be paying more for RP when it'll do practically nothing for me and my engine. RP is much more expensive when you can get 5 quart jug of M1 for super cheap.

besides the obvious royal purple, i would go german castrol as sed multiple times above. i heard that mobil 1 isnt really full synthetic, but its still high quality oil. german castrol on the other hand is fully synthetic and is the only oil used by bmw.

AFAIK, only "true" synthetic Mobil1 is 0w-40, which is also one of four BMW-LL01 certified oils (Among them, only 2 available in US - Mobil 1 0w-40 & German Castrol 0w-30).

I was a autotech and used just about every brand of oil and heard it all.

At the end of the day as long as you use a name brand oil and change it on time (for MOST cars/trucks 5k on Reg, 10k on syn, or once a year) you should not have oil related issues.

For me seeing what I saw when I was a tech I now use the cheapest name brand oil I can get. I have cases of mobil1 (onsale at costco and advance auto), jugs of quaker state syn (less than $4 a QT at wal-mart), and chevron reg oil (onsale at less than $2 a qt at costco) in my shop right now. I think Mobil1 is overrated. Only reason I have it in my stock right now was based on price nothing else.

Oil filters are about the same. I skip anything to do with honeywell (Fram) and don;t use the e-core any more due to some minor issues I have seen. I buy most from Rockauto in bulk when I need to stock up.

I have american, european, and asian cars I take care of in my family.

i used to be a nut about amsoil... now I just use Mobile 1 since I can get it at costco

Yep onsale until this Sunday. I think it is $9 off a case. Comes to $4.30 a qt if I remember correct. Not great but not bad.

I usually hold out for $4 or less for syn and $2 or less for Reg.

Never been to Costco for Oils. What brand/type(Syn, Reg)/weight do they have, usually?

Only syn I have seen is 5w30 and 10w30 mobil1. $35 for 6qt case

Reg oil has been chevron or shell I think, same 5/10W30 mix. $30 for 12 qt case

Not mind blowing prices but better than average and with coupon can be a fair to good deal. I bought 2 cases of the Reg oil last time as it was below $2 a Qt, my buy price point.

I use 5w20 motorcraft in my Milan and 5w 30 motorcraft in my wife's Malibu. From what I've read, the 5w30 is supposed to be superior.

Hello everyone!! Actually i am not expert but i want to share with you my personal experience about engine oil. From last two years i am using Bosch Engine oil for my car and it's giving better performance. So my point of view you can try it without any hesitation.:):)

Hello and welcome to AnandTech Forums. This thread is 4-and-a-half-years-old. Creating a new post in such an old thread is generally considered bad form. Please keep this in mind in the future.

Mobil one has been accused of creating big issues in Subaru issues, spun bearings etc. .

Spun bearings are the result of the eye end of the rod being machined slightly out of round. GM had the same problem from the 70's through the early 90's

Best oil? Any oil that is API service certified. I've used mainly conventional oil and never had a problem over the last 35 years.

In the 90's I jumped on the bandwagon and sat there being an oil snob. Synthetic in all the things, going with whatever brand every said "That oil rawks bro...you can FEEL the difference!!!!!"

Around the mid 00's I stopped wasting time and money.
Whatever it says in the owners manual goes into the car\motorcycle.
Having seen the insides of engines that have been exclusively synth and exclusively "whatever is on sale" and seeing ZERO difference I'm going to sit here and comfortably say I'm sticking to spec.

"BUT YOU NEED TO DO AN OIL ANALYSIS!!! THEN YOU WILL SEE THE SUPERIOR......blah blah blah blah blah"
Nope. I don't have too.

"MY CAR WAS CRAP UNTIL I SWITCHED TO UNICORN SYNTH OIL!!!!"
Good for you.

I always say that the best Motor oil is the one that gives you free stickers to put on your car.
