Best Motor Oil?

Got into a discussion with a guy at work today and he thinks Mobil 1 is the best where i believe RP is. Which is the best?

Bang for buck, probably Pennzoil. Look at some used oil analysis forums for more info.

No... There is no best oil, oil differs from engine to engine. One engine X oil can be the best, but in another B oil is better.

If you're thinking about the GT-R, it's whatever Nissan tells you is the best :awe:

Any differences in the "best" oils are also mitigated by the fact that any enthusiast buying that kind of oil also changes it far earlier and more frequently than needed.

The synthetic oils you see on the store shelves are not true synthetics. Too many variables in determining "what is the best oil." German Castrol is a true synthetic oil from what i remember. You will learn a lot here:

All of those companies make good oils. So does Pennzoil and Mobil1.

The only way to determine whether they're doing an adequate job with your specific engine, driving style, environmental conditions, etc.. is to have oil analysis done. Anything else is just a pure guess.

There is an oil analysis tech that used to pop into the forum a lot. He always complained that RP ate up bearings and that Mobil 1 was not consistently weighted from batch to batch. I can't remember for the life of me what he recommended though.

I still use Mobil 1 and if I'm expecting especially aggressive driving, Amsoil with an earlier change.

IIRC Subaru engines don't like Royal Purple, and Mobil 1 5w30 breaks down quickly. I run Shell Rotella T6 5w40 in the Subaru and Mobil1 10w30 in the MR2.

If your car is under warranty, it's whatever the manual tells you. Out of warranty, whatever you want.


My personal choice in everything I have with an engine, Pennzoil yellow bottle conventional. And I mean everything with an engine. Both cars, weed eater, lawn mower, tiller, snow blower & wood chipper, they all get yellow bottle.

I usually use UOA-confirmed oils from BITOG users for the cars I work on. For instance, for my G37, it would be Mobil 1 0w-40 (GT-R friendly, btw) and Pennozoil Platinum & Ultra 5w-30. For my brother's E90 325i, it would be BMW-LL01 certified, specifically, German Castrol and Mobil 1 0w-40.

Since Mobil 1 0w-40 works on both, I will probably stick with Mobil 1 0w-40 from now on for both

Yup, quite easy to find with those red words ---- as long as they carry 0W-30, which is only German Castrol exists in US. From my experience, Pepboys and Autozone carry it, while Advanced Auto Parts doesn't. Your local experience may vary

I only use amsoil...partially because of the high zinc formulas.

mobil1 is not what it used to be and I wouldn't personally use it.


doesn't royal purple use moly in their formula? if so, I would never use it any of my motors.

Mobil one has been accused of creating big issues in Subaru issues, spun bearings etc. I too also run 5w40, but probably not the best idea to do so in the winter. I switched back to some 5w-30 just for some peace of mind, when summer hits back to Rotella T6.

Screw Mobil 1. I was using their Mobile 1 Racing 4T for my bike. They went and changed the formulation, adding an SM rating to the mix.

Never changed the fucking bottle, only the ratings stamp on the back. Needless to say, that SM rating/formulation will cause some wet clutches to slip, and will require early replacement of the clutch.
