Best Motherboard Makers Question

My question is what brands have the best overall quality and least problems. I have had asus and so have my friends and have had no problems. Although MSI gets good reviews, all my friends that have had them have had some problems, so I don't really trust them. I also wouldn't really trust things like gigabyte, soyo, abit, chaintech, biostar, shuttle. What's your opinon on these, as well as these other brands: Soltek, Epox, Tyan, Aopen, Iwill. Finally, what brands are made in Taiwan? Any other suggestions?

i think asus and tyan make the highest quality products (but the price is so high i usually dont buy them 🙂 )

<<best overall quality and least problems>>

That's easy, Intel.

Overclocking and features, that's a different story.

What i would consider the top 5, in no particular order:

Supermicro, Gigabyte, Asus, Tyan, Intel.

Worst is PC-Chips, not really even a contest.

Asus, Intel and Supermicro.

Intel is the best hands down. if you want nhear 100% uptime an Intel board is the only "home" mobo to get. Downsides for most our lack of OC features and raid. Intel has great driver and bios support also. I only use Intel and I can count the # of crashes on a single digit. Before Intel I only used Asus. They went downhill a bit after the p3b-f. whoever made it just don't get one with a VIA chipset.

Aja!, What happends with the "Green Line Issue" of the Epox 7KXA (slot A), 8KTA (first socket A) and MVP4 (Super 7)????
This error caused a green line or reboot after showing the desktop on Win98SE. Acording to Epox FAQ, the problem is fixed deleting 2 files form MSBACKUP tape controller, mine fixed that way, but some guys were having the problem with Windows ME also.
So, acording to me, I set this lots of times, Epox test procedure was poor, at least with those mobos, they must tested with Win98 and assumed they would work ok also with Win98SE. I never forgive this to Epox, and that's wy I moved to ASUS since the late 2000. But of course, I'm buying seccond hand mobos since you can't buy an ASUS, you can look it in the shop window, but buying, is almost imposible.

I have to disagree with SuperMicro... we bought 32 SuperMicro dual PII boards a few years back for a Beowulf cluster and it took SO many attempts to get those suckers online it's scary. I just don't think they should be considered one of the top tier manufacturers anymore.

I've had good luck with Asus and Gigabyte boards. My limited experience with Tyan boards has been positive.

Abit has been the best motherboard I have ever owned. Thats kinda limited experience, seeing how Ive only had one abit...the KR7A Raid. This board boosted my memory bandwidth, 3dmark2001 score, and stability quite a bit over my MSI board. I do have a half damaged bios chip (ha, if you can believe that)...their tech support sent me out a new one at the beginning of this week...should have it soon enough. Didnt give me any grief in getting one either, very very nice people.

MSI makes pretty good boards, but for some reason I seem to have problems with them. They arent exactly bullet proof. My last MSI board, the KT266a based one had really piss poor memory bandwidth. It was real inconsistant about scoring also. Some options in the bios seem to have no effect what so ever, yet in the abit board there is a night and day difference. Specifically, the AGP Aperture size. Increase it on the ABIT board, and the score would go up....on MSI...nothing.

Gigabyte boards are fairly stable, my friend owns a KT266A board and I built one for my aunt with the AMD 761 northbridge. Very stable board, just seems their tech support is a little goofy but they have always helped me out.

Had some mixed experiences with Soyo. One was a kt133a board for a friend...after ironing out the bios its working perfectly. Another was a PIII board with the 815EP chipset....so far so good on that board also. They dont seem to have many bios updates though, guess they dont really need them or something.

Well theres the brief summary of the boards I have had experience with. Abit being my favorite. But dont get me wrong, I wouldnt have any doubts about trying boards like Asus or Epox. Hear a lot of great things about both companies.

Yep i hear a lot of great things about Epox and Asus too. Plus i hear just as many problems with Epox and Asus as Abit so there is no difference there.

Well maybe you don't like Asus but it is still over all the best maker of boards, The best support is FIC, Epox is getting better every year, Intel is no better or anymore stable than a good AMD setup, Oh and I have to put Sonyo in their to,

Simple fact is none of them are perfect. Its like imtim83 said...you hear good things/bad things about all kinds of motherboards, just becaues of the fact that not all motherboards are perfect.

As far as tech support goes, I have found that the quality of support you get can vary from day to day (with any compnay)..it just depends on the guy/gal you get the day you submit your inquiry too.

<< Abit fares pretty good....but none of them are good if you pour a pitcher of water on them. 🙂 >>

Heh. Let us forget that ever happened.
