If I wanted a good self defense weapon, what brand/caliber etc would be best? Basically for home defense. A shotgun? Handgun?

If you you don't plan on taking the firearm outside of your house, then you can't go wrong with a Mossberg 500 Persuader.

Any kind of dog as early warning + shotgun = sufficient.

if its for just home protection, go for something that wont penetrate a wall behind your intruder. shot gun does this nicely. if you want a handgun you can tote with ya occasionally, get a small frame 38 or a 380. those are good starters, just make sure it fits in your hand well and you can operate all the controls (safety, trigger, release) and still control it. fitting a firearm to your needs is much easier when you go to a shooting range that rents firearms to try out, you get to mess around and find one you like. my dad prefers the colt 45, i have a ruger 9mm. both are good. larger frame, easy to use/ maintain. beretta is a good one too, but tons of parts to mess with. make sure to use hollow points if youre using a hand gun for home defense, you dont want to hurt your neighbors (if in an apartment) or anyone that is supposed to be in your house (spouse, kids) in the course of trying to protect them. hollow points will generally segment and destroy the target you hit, but not go very far past that one target (if it even leaves the body).

german shepard if yure not already used to owning a gun, and get one to practice/ learn with. my black labs at home will tear up pretty much anything that gets near my house, inside or out.

ninja stars and sword.

Any bad guy who sees you in the hallway in your ninja outfit will say "WTF!? this guy is a ninja!" and then bolt out the way he came in.

How about hiding a fake dead body in the closet, as soon as they find that sucker they'll be out the door quick.

1 evil henchman at each entrance, 1 on perimiter patrol that checks in with the entrance henchman and 2 on random patrol that checks in with any other henchman.

Springfield XD series are very nice
HK make outstanding pistols.
I own a Sig and love it, also a very good pistol (P228 to be exact).
Glocks, although I hate them, are fantastic guns.

Your best bet is to find a local gun range that rents pistols and find what fits best FOR YOU.

I would do a pistol with a tactical rail and get a good light on it. The first step in engaging is target identification! And if your wandering around at night a GOOD light is the different between life and death, a good shot and a friend dead.

I tried that, but the ninja outfit takes too long to put on in an emergency, and it itches to sleep in. The guard thing works okay, but they tend to get choked out and people infiltrate your mainframe and stuff. It's a bummer.

At the moment I'm going with just a bunch of empty beer cans and shell casings in my yard and a gigantic chewed-up dog bowl on the porch. I wanted a fiery mumbling French giant in a wheelbarrow, but they wouldn't grant the zoning variance.

Yep, but nothing says stay out like a tripwired shotgun (I refer of course to the myriad U.S. cases where people actually linked the trigger of a shotgun to a door, not to the wiley coyote cartoons)

O RLY?

For the record, I own a shotgun. Just point this out so people don't get unrealistic expectations.
