Best modified drivers for 6800ultra?

I used to really like the XG drivers, but at some point I had problems with running video while azureus (java) was running. At some point I switched back to the reference drivers and the bug went away. Not sure if this is totally isolated to me or not.

Why? Are you scared of modified drivers or something? I am the author of the XTreme-G Mobile Edition drivers, and I know first hand how much better modded drivers can be over official NVIDIA ones, ESPECIALLY WHQL ones. WHQL is a joke, the SAME driver, 81.85 is faster, and has better IQ with the non-WHQL one than the WHQL one, and they're both "Official" drivers. We modders do what NVIDIA doesn't do: tweak for better image quality and better performance. Now that the tweaks are pretty much finalized (with the exception of an update here and there), any "problems" with modded drivers can be attributed to problems with the actual ForceWare driver, and not the tweaks that have been applied 😉 .

EDIT:

Also, the modding community does another thing in which NVIDIA doesn't: provide support for the user in troubleshooting problems (let's face it, NVIDIA's forums are a JOKE), and finding solutions to those problems. Sometimes, modified drivers can actually include fixes to some of these problems (such as the DVD playback problem from a while back) already included, no "messing around" needed.

Okay well i browsed around at XG's foreceware drivers and i really like how 78.03 adds better performance to games like bf2 that use alot of ram. 78.05 looks to be a better version with fixes for that, but how come you guys recommend 81+ drivers are there any added features because its not listed underneath them. Also in those newer drivers is their added support for agp? i thought only fixes for sli, but these are modded drivers so im not familiar of how they work...

Also how would i go about intalling modded drivers? uninstall current and just install new ones, or do i need a driver cleaner? does rivatuner work with mod drivers?

All drivers since 78.03 (78.05, 81.26, 81.84, 81.85, 81.87, 81.89, and 81.94) all have the "v2" tweaks that help stuttering in games like Battlefield 2.

We recommend 80-Series drivers because they have better performance all-around than the 78.0x drivers. Look at my sig, I'm using the 81.94 driver, and I have an AGP 6800GT, so don't worry about support for AGP.

For your question about uninstalling\installing drivers, follow the directions in THIS THREAD (it's the directions for using DriverCleaner Pro).

If their already tweaked for image quality what should i put settings on? quality or performance? Also should i tweak anything in performance and quality settings like texture clamp, mip map filtering etc...?

Don't want to hijack the thread or anything but does anyone know of any drivers that would boost the performance of my GeForce 4 MX 420/440? I'm currently just using the most recent nvidia drivers.

Because nVidia's driver engineers are generally a cut above any online modders.

If that's true, then why did it take so long for NVIDIA's driver engineers to fix the DVD playback bug (which in some instances, is still not fixed), but the modding community found a temporary fix for it almost instantaniously? Your point is moot. I am a programmer myself, and I know the settings for the NVIDIA drivers almost as well as the back of my hand. I do things that NVIDIA doesn't do. My drivers have support for every single Mobile GPU from NVIDIA in existence (from GeForce2 Go to GeForce Go 7800GTX, and everything in between). If NVIDIA's driver engineers are so great, then why can't they do what we modders have done? They expect everyone to stick with moldy oldy drivers for Mobile cards, because they're too lazy to do the work involved in adding Mobile support. NVIDIA makes good drivers, but the modders polish them off, and really make them shine 😉 .

What's to say your mods haven't broken something else that nVidia's drivers work fine in? Or are you trying to tell me you test your mods as thoroughly as nVidia who have thousands of machines crunching 24/7 on them?

You fix some things but that's not to say you don't break others.

I'm sure you're very good at what you do but I'll stick to official vendor drivers over modded drivers thanks. If you're not having issues with official drivers there's absolutely no reason to go the modded route.

True. However, if we get feedback saying something's broken, we look into it, and see if we can do anything about it. If so, then there's usually a fix released within a day for the problem. When was the last time NVIDIA did something like that? I can't remember anything like that.

Why choose modded drivers over official drivers? Simple. If not for anything else, better image quality and\or better performance. Who wouldn't want that?

Before you discount our drivers, why don't you try them for yourself? As it stands, your knocks against modded drivers are purely speculation.

I used to be EXACTLY like you. I wouldn't touch modded drivers, as I was unsure of their quality. I tried DNA-Force drivers, but wasn't pleased with their result. I then got bold and tried the XG 71.84 driver, and haven't turned back since. In order to provide a "reputable" opinion about the drivers, you have to look at both sided. Try them out. If you still don't like them, fine, I can accept that, because you at least tried them. Otherwise, you can't really say you know what you are talking about 😉 (no offense).

I've tried modded drivers but I found I had no need for them because anything they can do I can do better. If I need help with manually tweaking the registry something like Riva Tuner or ATi Tray Tools is a far more worthy companion than any modded driver.

Because I'm the one making the changes I know exactly what is changing and when its changing.

If the drivers have real problems at the code level (like DEP for example) you can't fix those with modded drivers and hence beta drivers are a better option in that case.

XG 81.94

If you dont feel comfortable with people modding the drivers, read the FAQ at TweaksRUs. It tells you how to create your own XG set. A lot of what they do is optimize for SSE(2)(3), and some various performance tweaks. If you look, it is nothing that can really harm your computer.

I can see where you are coming from though BFG. Personally, the XG's have never gone wrong, so i dont have a reason for concern yet (and i have used them since the very first set that they made)
