Sorry, if this is off topic but I need some helpful advise for a friend who plays on my server...... he is getting high ping rates at times....400+ and the question is? Does anyone know if a modem better and stronger than his Aopen 56K...maybe a US Robotics V92 will give him better ping rates.....he lives about 6-8 miles away from me and has no access to either cable or DSL where he lives. He is an avid gamer and never gets under 160 he has tried AOL's dish for high speed access but forget it it's no better than his 56K in fact it's terrible. His machine has speed 1.3 Gig AMD with a A7V266 mother board and over 256 mgs of ram.......at a loss for my friend

I don't think changing to another 56k modem is going to help much, just too limited. I have heard of people shotgunning their modems, but I don't know how good that would do.

Are you saying that he never gets under 160 ping on any server? Well that sounds normal to me for a modem user. In fact I think I would be delirious if I got a 175. Even in close proximity most modem users I've seen hover around 300. Also you are saying that he gets 400+ on your server. Are you saying he connects to your computer and you are using your own computer for a server or do you have a dedicated server running on at least a cable modem(even cable modems have severe limitations for gaming used as servers that is). A new modem deffinitely will not help.

Back when I was using a normal modem (now on DSL thank god), I used to get ~120-170 ping pretty much throughout the game. I keep Net_Graph 3 on, so I always know what my ping is. Anyway, I USR is one of the best you can get...If it doesn't help, nothing will. (Except getting a fatter pipe)

The other day he was getting a 400 ping on my server at 5:30am, anbs yes I have a dedicated server or sometimes I run the listen server and my cable connection is 1.5 down and 512 up and we were the only two in the game at the time I should mention. Someone suggested on another site for him to make sure his connection/modem properties has the software compression not checked, it is checked by default and can increase ping levels if checked. Worth a shot so I will relay the info to my buddy.

I used to be able to occasioanly acheive a ping of 100ms on a blue moon with my old Zoltrix ISA hardware 56k modem. That would fluctuate upto say 175-200 in the worst case though locally.

If anybody is a keen CS player - it's not even worth thinking about playing after you have used ADSL etc - Best ping ever was 18!!!! :D
That was like two players only and all the planets in alignment or something ;)

Normally 30-100 though!

You are never going to get great pings with dialup. That said, you are still pretty high. I would highly suggest researching carriers other than AOL. AOL is notoriously bad for gaming. Most carriers will give you a first months free deal for dialup so it should be pretty cheap and easy to try a few to find the best in your area.
