Which companies do you feel are the best motherboard makers? Looking in terms of overall quality and stability first and also in performance and o/c

Abit and Epox are my top picks. Asus is alright, but their tech support leaves much room for improvement.

I like EPoX a lot I am happy with my 8rda+ lots of features (400MHz bus, dual channel memory support, firewire, USB2, onboard NVIDIA audio and ethernet, ATA133) love nforce chipset and it?s a good price. (80 bucks)

TYAN makes good rock solid boards. (I run them on most my servers I build)

I also have had good expericance with SOYO and ASUS.

another vote for ASUS and Abit...never had a problem w/ either, and both are rock solid. actually the most stable and reliable boards are made by intel, but they are impossible to OC.

Asus Asux!

I choose FIC (their mobos run forever without problems), and Epox. Have used many many FIC boards, and have the 8RDA+ in my main box now.

IMO it does not go by the "maker" anymore. but by specific mainboard models, especially for enthusiasts.
