Perhaps not...which did you find the most entertaining...to many people have to overanalize everything.

If you like one movie better because it was based on real events..then that is your favorite.

The story wasn't cheesy at all. In fact, the message the story gives was the most significant of any war movie ever made.

Yeah considering a similar event (4 brothers serving on a single ship that was destroyed), left parents with no kids, enacted one of the most important policies in WW2.

That's not the central message of the film.

It really surprises me that so many people miss it.

The central message of SPR is that we are all Private Ryan. Ryan was just a euphemism for all of us. We all need to "earn this."

To me the central message was that war is hell. Unorganized chaos with a bunch of scared kids fighting for their lives. Upham represented the coward in all of us, a pacifist that horrors of war changed in to to a soldier. The brutality and blood in the movie which showed people getting mowed down like a Quake deathmatch battle was effective in showing the grotesque nature of war

No. Those are all peripheral messages. The story is bookended by it's central message... that of Private Ryan unsure if he has "earned this."

It's a common theme among WWII vets, my father included. They want to know what we are going to do with the freedom and security they fought and so many died for.

We are all Private Ryan. We all need to "Earn this."

I do, however, like and agree with this interpretation

That was the message I meant all along. It's not my fault you jumped to conclusions.

I haven't seen Letters from Iwo Jima or Flags of Our Fathers yet but those both looked pretty good.

Saving Private Ryan was good in that it shows that war is a giant mess instead of the usual glorification most war films have going.

I liked Gettysburg and Glory, but I went for Gettysburg simply because it is the first in alphabetical order.

Btw... the greatest war movie of all time is not even on there--wtf? STRIPES

Hep topic. Lame poll. Seriousry, there are too many good movies missing and several crap ones that aren't even in the running for best.

I happen to have a short list, a few of which have been mentioned by others but alas most of which are conspicuously AWOL.

Voting is unthinkable before at least these are added. Heck, throw in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly if a war settings is 'nuff (which apparently it is), and make it even more difficult to choose. Havent' seen Letters from Iwo Jima yet but it's highly rated.

Good call on 9th company, not sure if they are available in English, but other good movies about Chechen war are Vojna(War), Blokpost(Blockpost), Chest' Imeyu.
Awesome battles in Fuurin Kazan(Samurai Banners), for those who like samurai movies.

And I chose FMJ and Band of Brothers. FMJ because of Kubrick and Band of Brothers because it's just great.

Band of Brothers: The official record is that the 101st held the line in the Bulge until Patton came to their rescue. The contention among those soldiers on the line, is that they never needed resuing. Apparently, this maneuver by Patton went a long way towards creating his image

As long as weather turned when it did sure they could have held out. Just about all of the armor formations had already bypassed them and they were facing mostly VG troops. Air drops could have kept them supplied and air strikes would have given relief during determined attacks.

Of course instead of the division being combat capable again shortly after relief they would have been reduced to something like a 2 battalion force if Patton didn't shift an entire army groups axis of advance by 90' while on the move with minimal effect on its movement rate.

As for Pro-war: If you enjoy sleeping in fox holes for weeks at a time in sub-zero temps, getting shelled constantly, watching your friends get blown to pieces...well, that would be pro war, I suppose. Not to mention the nightmares you will likely endure for the rest of your life, the guilt most veterans seem to harbor over taking life--even though it is their job.

Think you're reading too much into the sappy war movies. No one is gonna want to be getting fired on, but that doesn't mean when people see the purpose that they won't go out to get the job done.

I thought Braveheart sucked tbh. First off: Scots didn't start wearing kilts til the 16th century, secondly, the armor and armanment used was not realistic at all. For one thing, the Scots used padded jackets and metal and leather helmets. They also used many axes of celtic and Viking type. Also, another bunch of tripe, dealing with the plot. It doesn't have that warlike feel, as well as the fact that the Scots had polished spears, not tree trunks. And the idea of using a spear wall was centuries old, influenced by the Picts.
