Well unless you watch what you eat no matter how many crunches or how long you run will really get your abs showing. Being fit and having a nice body is pretty much this....70 percent diet 30 percent exercise.

body doesn't spot burn, so in order to lose fat theres 3 things to do
1) have a proper diet. this includes drinking at least half a gallon of water a day. no really, you should be drinking that much.
2) aerobics burn calories while you do them, as well as getting your heart in shape.
3) strength training increases your resting metabolism so you burn more calories while sitting or sleeping or whatever.

Sittups/Crunches is you need!
Serious, do about 200-300 of them and you will notice a big difference!
Also, running a mile a day will not hurt. Run, not some bike ;)

Sex.

What? It's true, it'd help! :)

Well, here's what I'd more seriously suggest to you. Do 10-20 crunches every morning and/or evening. During the day, some time during the after-noon, liberate half an hour and dedicate it to some light jogging, or running if you're used to it. Do that, consistently, for a few weeks. Your stomach will be 100% flat. If you slack off of course you will have no results. If you do that though, you'll have a sexy flat stomach guaranteed (you didn't mention any handicaps of any sort, so don't flame me if I didn't consider that).

If you REALLY want to get a great workout, like someone else mentioned sign up for martial arts. I know several people who were in Tae Kwon Do, and I've heard Kung Fu is great as well. Judging from knowing them, I'd highly recommend Tae Kwon Do or any form of martial arts for both physical and mental health. You will feel better about yourself, too.

I do warn you though, martial arts (at least most of them AFAIK) are quite intense, and if you're not serious about it, you will be wasting your money and time, and won't make it anywhere. You could also learn to box. ;) Despite what anybody may think, boxing provides an excellent cardio workout, works out your entire upper body from the upper abs, lower back (lats?) and up. I know you may not be looking to "buffen up", but if you do some boxing 1-2 days a week for an hour or so, you will lose that extra fat VERY fast, and you'll have smoother more toned muscle definition.

Trust me on the boxing though, I know from experience. It's fun, and gets ya in shape. :)

First off, watch your diet. Eat the right amount of the right kinds of food. I have this same problem...Been completely inactive for a good two year period and all I eat are bagels with cream cheese. Terrible!!! You have to watch your diet.
Secondly, do sports...Any kind of sport will do. Basketball, volleyball, soccer (is great), or martial arts are just examples.
Thirdly, do sit-ups and do a lot of them. By a lot I mean work your way up from doing, say 20 each morning and evening, to doing 100 - 200 each morning and evening. I used to do 1000 at a single time without pause, so I can say that once you get used to them it's really not a problem.
Getting rid of your belly isn't magic...it takes hard work and lots of it...same story as with the thigh and butt area.

Good luck...

Good luck! I've never had a completely flat stomach in my entire life and I work out like crazy. I figured I'm destined to be a little chubby in that area forever.

Oh well. Such is life.

But I wish you luck....and I wish I had some advice.

I heard the "Fuk'n in the butt" method works wonders.... definately not from personal experiance though :p All the bending over will get your abs in shape as well as toning your buttox.

Diet, exercise.

The lower abbs are the ones that most people do not work out. Do leg raisers. But do be careful as most people's backs are weak. That is another part that most body builders do not build and people in general. So if they start to hurt don't do them. If you can manage them do 20 reps x 3 sets. This is hard and keep your legs straight.

Also when doing sit ups be STRICT with FORM. Cheating in doing them to make sure you do 20 is a no go. You have to be STRICT. IT doesn't matter how many you do but if you do less with perfect form your much better off. So don't swring your head, neck and arms up to give that little momentum at the start. Put the tiips of your fingers to your ears and keep them outside ways like a *Y* shape. Then use your abbs to pull up.

If you can do them at an incline that helps to work out the lower abbs as well.

As for diet avoid fizzy drinks and especially alcohol. A pint of beer has about 220 calories and a alco-pop has about 225 calories. And if you've been to a gym and known how much effort it is to burn off 200 calories you will quickly realise to drink water. Its tough but you can do it.

Strength train. Will increase your metabolic rate and will help to burn off calories when doing nothing but breathing. You will not get bulky unless you train serously 3x a week and eat the right amounts of foods.

If helps a lot when exercising when your younger. At about the age of 21 your body slows down a lot and all the food you eat goes to your belly. So start young and you will have an easier time achieving the flat stomach. I have a flat stomach/6pack/working on 8pack. Stand up straight also DO NOT SLOUCH!.

I would strongly advise a Martial Art to take up. Not only is it good exercise but it WILL help you in difficult situations if they do happen. Also its more fun then gyming.....
