Best method to flatten stomach?

I'm a girl actually, despite the fact that a lot of you think that I'm a guy. 😉

I'm not fat. I just accumulated a tummy. Been inactive for 4 months, hence fat build up 😱

So, whats the best way to flatten back my stomach and keep it that way? Jogging will only keep me fit, right?

you can do crunches, but to truly "flatten" the abs you need to work on the lower abs. to do that, left lifts are really effective, as well as hip thrusts/lifts.

/btw, i'll be expecting some before & after pics. 😀
 
Jogging actually helps because it is a cardio exercise...thus helps burn fat. At the same time, running makes you breath and tighten your stomach muscles, resulting in a flatter tummy.

The best way is to do crunches, but that only works the top part of the stomach.... there are other variations....

The best thing in my opinion is to go join a martial arts class like tae kwon do or kung fu. They really work the stomach area plus strengthen the mind and other parts of the body. I highly recommend it.
 
hey, you know those things they advertise on tv that are like straps that go on your body, and then they electrically stiumlate your muscles. Does anyone know if that would really work? Then I could do nothing all day and be in shape 🙂
 
Those EMS things will tire you out as much as manually working out, and they hurt like a bitch too, and scar.
 
To truly flatten your stomach you have to lose weight. That is all there is to it. You can do crunches until you're blue in the face. All they will do is increase muscle around that area increasing tone somewhat, but the same amount of fat will be there. It won't look as bad if some muscle is behind it, but ultimately you have to lose weight. That is the only way. If you are already thin everywhere else you have to decide for yourself if it's worth losing weight as a whole (since it will obviously come off everywhere on your body) to reduce weight around your middle.

Skoorb, I don't think that I need to lose weight. I'm skinny enuff. If I lose some more weight, I'd be a bag of bones with a big tummy. Thats even worse :Q

 
Well, if you have fat around your tummy, you'll need to get rid of that first... so jogging will help with that, it's a great cardio exercise.

But if you want to build it flat and tone it up, this is an EXCELLENT book

3 min Abs

For $10, what do you have to lose? And 3 mins a day AT MOST. I do the exercises, and it takes me only about 2 mins a day. The author of the book, Kurt Brungardt, is very well known in the industry, and his books are one of the most popular and comprehensive available. And when he says 3-min abs a day, he really means it. The book is very small, only 80 pages, and only about 20 pages are exercises. The exercises themselves are split into 3 days, with each day composing of 3 exercises only. Give it a shot, probably the best $10 you'll ever spend.

since it's only your stomach that you want to concentrate on, what better way than to do sit-ups? that will work without question! 😀

I'm not a professional fitness trainer but it seems that your body likes to place the fat around there. My weight goes there also (it does for most guys) and regardless of how many situps or stomach excercise I do the only way I can ever lose weight around my middle is to lose bodyfat. Since the fat goes there first, it also seems to come off there first when I lose weight. Your body just likes to place weight around the middle...

Massive amounts of muscle will tighten the area and firm it up and make it look better, but you'll still have the same body fat around that area.

Yep, it works awesome for me. Well, the book isn't some big secret formula to working out, it's just a variety of crunches put into an awesome routine. As for sit-ups, i completely stay away from those. Hard on the back and neck, and they're really not that effective.

Ok, I have answered this question before, but apparently nobody likes to listen. There are two ways to have a big belly. The first of which is by being fat. The only way to get rid of that is by reducing your body fat. You said this is not the case so that leaves the second; distension. Distension occurs when the muscles of the abdomen are too weak to contain your internal organs, and they push outwards. (nice huh?) The way to get rid of this is by strengthening those muscles. CONTRARY to popular belief, situps and crunches are NOT the best way to do this. This range of motion works the rectus abdominus, or the muscles that make up a "six pack" These muscles aren't really responsible for reigning in the organs. What you need to do is exercise your transvers abdominus, which acts like a natural girdle. TO do this, you should either stand up straight, or get on your hands and knees (doesn't really matter as long as your back is straight), and try to suck your bellybutton through to your spine. I would recommend doing this for 10 sets of 10 second holds starting 2 times per week. If you are distended, this means that this muscle is weak, and you don't want to over-do it to start, a tear here is NOT pleasant. After a few weeks of this, increase as you like, and you feel comfortable with.

EDIT: sorry, seems that you said you DO have some belly fat. Only to get rid of this is by decreasing your overall fat composition. You can NOT spot burn fat. Loads of situps will not get rid of the flab directly over the stomach. I recommend a sensible diet combined with a moderate exercise routine. What do you like to do? Jog? ride a bike? play tennis? I would also recommend some moderate weight training in your routine. And don't worry about getting bulky as a lot of girls do. You simply don't have the requisite hormones to get big and bulky, so it really isn't an issue. Good luck. 🙂
