I realize people are going to have differing opinions and it's not a matter of right/wrong. We are preparing to buy/furnish a house and of course the bed my fiancee' wants was the most expensive in the store; a Simmons Beautyrest Black. Now, she has disc problems in her back so her comfort is 100% my priority, but I'd like to try other options out.

Does anyone have any input?

I recently purchased a memory foam mattress via Amazon, and love it. I have neck problems, and immediately started sleeping better. Have you and your fiancee tried a foam mattress? They can be very expensive in the stores, but online much cheaper. My queen size was less than $400.00. The key with foam mattresses is not the brand so much as how much actual foam is inside, there is only a couple of companies that make the actual foam compounds. They license or sell the foam compounds to manufactures. In other words, your don't have to buy a TemperPedic to get a quality foam mattress. I have not met a single person who has bought a memory foam mattress and regrets it.

According to my sister (who owns a TempurPedic) you should avoid memory foam mattresses. They will degrade in only a few years and become lumpy.

This.

I bought a "Spa Sensations" 12" memory foam mattress from walmart.com for like $400 and it's extremely comfortable.

well, I hope that's not the case. I picked up Costco's Novaform--$400 for Queen--back in October. It has been great since then.

I like a firm mattress, and this is perfect for me.

The reviews I was reading, most people say ignore tempurpedic b/c of the cost. WalMart has one that is ~$300 for a Queen.

But, OP, you should realize that Mattress salespeople are just like used car salesmen. Assume everything they tell you is a giant lie--b/c it is.

There is no conventional product/quality regulation in the mattress industry, so all of the names and styles they attach to various mattresses are completely meaningless. Basically: Sealy makes, maybe 4 different mattresses, but you'll see 100 or so different names, depending on where they are sold, over a preposterous range of prices.

look through some of this info:

someone at AT linked this a while ago. I found it very helpful:

Consumer reports is always great:

Haven't seen this one...looks like it could be crazy. :hmm:

Best way is to go to the store and test out the mattress with your fiance. Pick a time when you both have a few hours free, wear some comfortable clothing, and go lie on the mattresses you like at the store. If it is uncomfortable to lie on within the time you are on it then you can mark it off.

I know not everyone enjoys tempur-pedic beds, and what one finds comfortable might not apply to another.
