Best Man?

What exactly is the traditional role of a best man in weddings?

My brother is getting married and has asked me, but I have no clue what I just agreed to


(other than taking him to see nekkid women, and drinking lots of :beer: )

well I really don't think they will need my help to plan the wedding, I have no sense at planning and they know this, plus my brother's fiance has 4 sisters who are probably much better at this than I.

Can't find any...I'll keep searching. I keep seeing the one about him helping to capture the bride, but I read somewhere that he was also supposed to step over and marry her to preserve her honor if the groom ditched.

I plan on having 3 "best men".

1) My brother will be in charge of my bachelor party
2) My best friend will be giving the speech at the reception
3) My dad will be the "ring guy"

Back in the good old politically incorrect days, you stole your wife from another tribe or village. Your "best man" stood at your side during the wedding in case you needed help fighting off your bride-to-be's father/brothers/cousins/etc.

Your best man should be someone who would do anything for you, who knows you as well as you do. By being someone's best man, you vouch for the fact that the bride and groom should be married.

You should help out wherever possible and ensure that the groom does not get cold feet about the whole thing. You are his coach and support.

my best man did the research and this fact was part of his speech. "best man" is actually a corruption of "second best man".
