Best lyrics in a song in recent time?

pulse8

Lifer
With all the crap out there with boy bands and Britney Spears and all, what's the best written song you've heard that's come out recently? For me it's probably Three Libras by A Perfect Circle

threw you the obvious and you flew
with it on your back, a name in your recollection,
thrown down among a million same.
difficult not to feel a little bit disappointed
and passed over
when i've looked right through
to see you naked and oblivious
and you don't see me.
but i threw you the obvious
just to see if there's more behind the eyes
of a fallen angel,
the eyes of a tragedy.
here i am expecting just a little bit
too much from the wounded.
but i see through it all
and see you.
so i threw you the obvious
to see what occurs behind the eyes of a fallen angel,
eyes of a tragedy.
oh well. apparently nothing.
you don't see me.
you don't see me at all.

It's a beautiful song. I would also have to say anything by Incubus. I think they are the best band to come out in a LONG time.

Tool - Third Eye

Dreaming of that face again.
It's bright and blue and shimmering.
Grinning wide and comforting me with it's three warm and wild eyes.

On my back and tumbling
Down that hole and back again
Rising up and wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye.

In Out In Out In Out

A child's rhyme stuck in my head.
It said that life is but a dream.
I've spent so many years in question
To find I've known this all along.

"So good to see you.
I've missed you so much.
So glad it's over.
I've missed you so much
Came out to watch you play.
Why are you running?"

Shrouding all the ground around me.
Is this holy crow above me.
Black as holes within a memory
And blue as our new second sun.
I stick my hand into his shadow
To pull the pieces from the sand.
Which I attempt to reassemble
To see just who I might have been.
I do not recognize the vessel,
but the eyes seem so familiar.
Like phosphorescent desert buttons
Singing one familiar song...

"So good to see you.
I've missed you so much.
So glad it's over.
I've missed you so much.
Came out to watch you play.
Why are you running away?"

Prying open my third eye.

So good to see you once again.
I thought that you were hiding.
And you thought that I had run away.
Chasing the tail of dogma.

I opened my eye and there we were.
So good to see you once again
I thought that you were hiding from me.
And you thought that I had run away.
Chasing a trail of smoke and reason.

Prying open my third eye.

Incubus - Stellar

meet me in outer space
we could spend the night
watch the earth come up
i've grown tired of that place
won't you come with me
we could start again
how do you do it
make me feel like i do
how do you do it
it's better than i ever knew
meet me in outer space
i will hold you close, if you're afraid of heights
i need you to see this place, it might be the only way
that i can show you how
it feels to be inside of you
how do you do it
make me feel like i do
how do you do it
it's better than i ever knew
you are stellar

Remarkably this song was supposedly penned in minutes. It is incredible what a true genius can do...

CHORUS:
I should be so lucky
Lucky lucky lucky
I should be so lucky in love
I should be so lucky
Lucky lucky lucky
I should be so lucky in love

Another chorus from the 'bard'

CHORUS:
I guess I like it
I guess I like it
I guess I like it like that
I guess I like it
I guess I like it
I guess I like it like that

even more

CHORUS:
'Cos I miss you
Yeah I miss you
Said I miss you
Yeah I miss you

Pure class and cute to boot 🙂

Know me broken... by my master
Teach me on child... of love, hereafter

Into the flood, again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try and see it once my way

Drifting body... it's sole desertion
Flying, not yet... quite the notion
Into the flood, again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try and see it once my way

Into the flood, again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try and see it once my way
Am I wrong?

Have I run too far to get home
Have I gone?
And left you here alone

Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home
Have I gone?
And left you here alone

If... I... would... could you?

its been awhile -staind
outside -aron lewis
pardon me -incubus
be quite and drive -deftones

I Mother Earth - Pisser

(from the last verse)

It seems I've had a lifelong headcold full
Of negatives, mindwarps and eclipsing suns
Like hot air through my underwear while
Sitting in my chocolate chair at home...
It thrills me, turn the lights out and leave
Me alone

😉

<< i've always like Outside by Aaron Lewis (the singer of Staind)...its a very good song >>

I second that. Very cool lyrics indeed!

Also Judith by A Perfect Circle:

"Your such an inspiration for the ways I'd will never ever choose to be...."

Shania Twain - Still The One

When I first saw you, I saw love.
And the first time you touched me, I felt love.
And after all this time, you're still the one I love.

Looks like we made it
Look how far we've come my baby
We mighta took the long way
We knew we'd get there someday

Bridge:
They said, "I bet they'll never make it"
But just look at us holding on
We're still together still going strong

Chorus:
(You're still the one)
You're still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
You're the one I want for life
(You're still the one)
You're still the one that I love
The only one I dream of
You're still the one I kiss good night

Ain't nothin' better
We beat the odds together
I'm glad we didn't listen
Look at what we would be missin'

Bridge

Chorus

Chorus

I'm so glad we made it Look how far we've come my baby

And I believe in the future
we shall suffer no more
Maybe not in my lifetime
but in yours, I feel sure

Song dogs barking at the break of dawn
Lightning pushes the edges of a thunderstorm
And these streets
Quiet as a sleeping army
Send their battered dreams to heaven, to heaven
For the mother's restless son
Who is a witness to, who is a warrior
Who denies his urge to break and run

Who says: Hard times?
I'm used to them
The speeding planet burns
I'm used to that
My life's so common it disappears
And sometimes even music
Cannot substitute for tears

i cant be bothered quoting any of it. but nearly all off Pennywise's lyrics have very deep meaning. even if you dont like punk, check out the lyrics section of they're site anyway.

Shania Twain is a GODDESS. But I hope you're joking if you think "Still the One" is good lyrics. It holds a close second to Bon Jovi's "Wanted: Dead or Alive" for Most Stupid Cliches in a Hit Song.

The only country song that ever really impressed me with deep lyrics was "The Dance" by Garth Brooks. I'm sure there are more out there, but I don't listen to that style very much so I don't know of any others. I think in general, country music is shooting for more of a simple or 'feel good' theme. It makes sense that rock would have more depth in the lyrics, since there's an entire genre of brooding, introspective music in rock that isn't there in country.

Once again, though, I am no expert on country music so I may be overlooking some.

Yeah, A Perfet Circle's Judith IS a fantastic song. Well, that is if you're not really into religion

you're such an inspiration for ways that i will never
ever choose to be.
oh so many ways for me to show you how your savior
has abandoned you.
Thank your god.
he did this, took all you had and left you this way.
still you pray, never stray,
never taste of the fruit. never thought to question why.
it's not like you killed someone.
it's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side.
praise the one who left you broken down and
paralyzed.
he did it all for you.
oh so many ways for me to show you how your
dogma has abandoned you.
pray to your christ, to your god.
never taste of the fruit,
never stray, never break,
never choke on a lie,
even though he's the one who did this to you
thought to question why
it's not like you killed someone.
it's not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side.
talk to jesus christ as if he knows the reasons why he
did this all to you.
he did it all for you.

That song was actually written in one sitting. Maynerd just sat down and started writing and that is what he came up with. The band is more gothic than I normally prefer, but the lyrics are just so intense.

The song isn't anti-religion. The song was written about a relationship maynard was in and he was denouncing what she believed in more or less, or how she acted through the relationship. He's stated very clearly that the song is not anti-god or anti-religion in any manner. You should really read up on music before you make statements like this.

Well, you say denouncing what she believed in? Would that be what she believed in her religion? The lyrics very much question the role of Jesus. Also, I don't do research on EVERY song I've ever heard. I think songs are also there for your own interpretation. With one of the lines, which I removed part of for this forum, states, "Thank (fsck) your god."

David

haha prodigy69...that song is classic
i dunno how so many ppl are into that weird hard rock like a perfect circle...reminds me of reading SPIN or Stuff mag where a reader writes into the editors saying how "jonathan davis' (of korn...to me this is the weird hard rock) songs reach out to so many lost youth and without these songs they would be hopeless" ... i find it hard to believe that some ppl would have such poor social networks that they would actually listen to mass produced music for hope in their life. I think this is a case of ppl trying to show their authenticity or at least convey an image.

Ya outside and its been awhile by staind are good but another good one is Innocent by Fuel
Satan, you know I lie
Gently I go into that good night
all our lives get complicated
search for pleasures overrated
never armed our souls
for what the future would hold
when we were Innocent

Angels, lend me your might
forfeit all my lives to get just on right
all those colors long since faded
all our smiles are confiscated
never were we told
wed be bough and sold
when we were Innocent

This prayer is for me tonight
this far down that line and still ain't got it right
and while confessions not yet stated
our next sin is contemplated
never did we know
what the future would hold ro that wed be bought and sold
when we were Innocent
