For a typical pc hard drive OK, but portable device storage ain't so cheap. Today I was looking at Compact Flash cards (what my iPAQ uses), a 1GB unit retailed at about $100 (brick & mortar store). Looking online cheapest I found is $52 plus s/h at NewEgg. That's alot better, but still not what I'd call cheap storage.

Hitachi 4GB Microdrive, runs at a sustained 7MB/s and is the same drive used in the IPOD Mini and the Creative MuVo2. You can get it at Newegg.com for $151.25

I use this in my Dell Axim along with a 2GB SD card for applications & ebooks.

It's mp4 encoded with AAC plus. Good quality even at 24 kbps stereo, unbelievable (such low bitrates are great for pda or other portable music players where space is a concern. That's why I started researching this topic in the first place). See my page for details and samples:
ogg vs mp4

For LOW BITRATE youre right, but since storage is so cheap these days there is little need for low bitrate, unless youre streaming from the net on dial-up. Who has dial-up these days anyway?

🙁 You dont have to rub it in. I have Dial-Up and Direcway Satellite. Both are crap. Sometimes when you live 30 miles from the city you can't be as lucky!

Interesting, though for less than $150 I can buy an entire (used) 4GB Ipod. But still, like I said earlier, Pocket PC's can do alot more than an iPod (which I'm sure you also know). Since I'm relatively new to PDA's, I wonder if this drive is compatible with my my iPaq 3630. If so, it may be worthwhile for me to buy a used iPod, transplant the drive (flash card?) to the PDA. That way I can also transplant the drive back to the pod in case I wanted to use it, all for the same price. Basically, free iPod for me (if this works)
