Put it another way, if you were going to show a non-gaming person how amazing computer graphics can be rendered with one of the current high end graphic solutions what would you choose? What game do you think would make their jaw drop?

My vote would be for either Splinter Cell Chaos Theory or Half Life 2, but surely I'm missing some worthy contenders.

OK, let's change the rules now--how about the best looking game that's not HL2, Doom 3 or Far Cry? Something that's not an obvious choice.

My vote would be for Nexus--The Jupiter Incident or maybe Full Spectrum Warrior.

HL2 without a doubt. I showed my mom, she was shocked. Just seeing the sun glowing in the background while sitting on a dock... wow. I didn't move for a few minutes.

Hmm, that makes it more interesting. WoW comes to mind, not from a sheerly technical level (although the technicalities involved in puting together a MMORPG are impressive in and of themselves), but due to the art design and the 'alive' feel of much of the environment.

Also, Rome: Total War is great for achieving an 'epic' quality to its graphics thanks to the sheer scale of what is displayed on the screen.

I'd have to say Chronicles of Riddick. I found the engine very impressive, although it didn't scale as well as D3 or HL2.

If you want to drop someone's jaw with graphics, the hell level in Doom 3 usually does the trick.

i think splinter cell: chaos theory is awesome. Out of HL2, FarCry and Doom3 i would probably give my vote to farcry (i love the tropical paradise look) but all are very impressive in their own way.

Nalu!

BTW, does anyone know how to get past the first level? Not that I'm in any hurry.

If you can find some Everquest 2 screenshots at all max settings with AA active... it looks superb (and runs at around 5-10 fps on a 6800 Ultra)

Nexus was an awesome looking game, but I doubt showing space scenes would get the point across. If you want to show a realistic scene, a good FPS is the way to go (HL2, Farcry)
