Hi,
I have an Emachines/300 (celeron) with built in ATI II/C AGP chip which supports 1024*768. I don't have an AGP slot but have a PCI slot available. I can not buy a new PC at this time, thus upgrading my graphics card is the only solution.

I have purchased a 21" monitor which supports 1600*1200 @85Hz. I am not a gamer but I am running applications such as Matlab and Mathematica, which can generate complex graphics such as surface plots, etc. I am running both Linux 7.1 and Windows 2000 on this machine.

Given all these what is the best PCI card I can get? I can spend max 150 dollars. Thank you for your precious time.

(note: I know matrox G450 has a pci version. But I saw G450 from HP and Compaq. I don't know what the difference is. I also heard GeForce2 MX and GTS but too confused between the two. Besides there are many card makers - have no idea which one is preferred?).

Nvidia has great Linux drivers from what I have heard, maybe a geforce2mx would be the setup? Nice Elsa, GF2 MX pci, because its an Elsa, i would guess this is probably the best one among the mx's for 2d image quality as well :).

There's a special going on at Office Depot this week for an ATI Radeon PCI video card. Check on the hot deals forum.

I know Mandrake 8.0 has Radeon support. Not sure about the other Linux flavors.
