Best Linux distro for laptop and general Linux Noob?

I would echo Ubuntu and SimplyMEPIS. I'm not into Gnome, so my experience with Ubuntu is limited, but it has excellent hardware detection (found my offbrand monitor no problem, the only distro to do so).
 
Stay clear of Mandrake, Fedora is the best choice for someone that has never had any experience with Linux IMO.

What's wrong with Mandrake? I just installed Mandrake on an old pc. It's a bit like Windows with its GUI.
 
Nice to see this thread get bumped up from the archives.

Since I originally posted, I've tried the following distros:

Ubuntu
MEPIS
Damn Small Linux
Fedora Core 3
Xandros
SUSE
PClinuxOS

In the end, I settled on PCLinuxOS. All of the distros I tried were great, but I stuck with PCL because of the apps that came with it and it was just my personal favorite.
