Install using Mandrake 8.1 and then go to the linux from scratch site and get the package and install that

I think it is at www.linuxfromscratch.org

Anyway, then you can have a linux distribution taylored to exactly what you want and you get to learn a lot about linux in a very short time.

I´m a brazilian, so I´ll give my vote to Conectiva 7.0! ;-)

Mandrake, RedHat, Conectiva...all have their good points.

Well....
The very best linux distribution is the one that you make: LinuxFromScratch is a good way to do it but there are others...(rock linux
comes to mind)
The best beginner distros are SuSe, RH and Mandrake.

The best windows replacers would be Corel and Redmond.

Of course, for the power users debian is a must....

But I still prefer slackware, good old slack with its packages directly from the coders keyboards.... no big changes, no alterations,
etc.
