Best LCD *strictly* for design 19"+

Finally looking to take the jump from CRT to LCD, but still wary since I use my comp strictly for design. I just wish they could make CRTs thinner, but for now, I'm hoping that LCDs have come far enough that I could finally use one for design. I've been looking at the 2 dell widescreen models, the 2005 and the 2405, which I like. If I get a new job, I'll take the plunge and buy the 2405, otherwise, just wondering if it's even worth it to try out the LCD market. I don't play games, the computer is used for music, movies and 80% design. Any help?

I think that EIZO is known for the best professionel monitors, but they're a bit more pricey than other brands, and wether they're worth it to you I don't know.

I'm a web designer and last year I made the jump from a 21" F-500 trinitron, to a 19" LCD, and then just last week to the 2405FPW. I don't think you'll be disappointed with the change. Layout is sweet and it's nice to be able to have two full size pages side by side for comparison. With cleartype at native resolution it's _really_ clear if you also work with text.

It might help is you say what has bother you before, or design of what... Design of Webspace, Design of Print Magazine, Design of mechanical parts....? Check out the Sticky thread at the top of the forum. The intro post gives a long breakdown of the current state of the LCD market..

I do web, 3d arch/product design mostly, with some corporate identity work as well. I think the dell definitely looks promising, it's slick, large viewing area. I guess in the end I can always compare to my CRT and see how off the colors/contrast are.

It seems like accurate color and large contrast are more important that fast response.

Dell produces some large cheap monitors that fit that need (but they are not the greatest for colors without a calibrator)

If the best color and consistent contrast are the goals, EIZO makes the best for less than 1k. You sacrifice screen size but gain in better color calibration and more flexible OSD/features for color matching.

You should look into some samsung LCDs, such as 193P, 204T, 244T etc.

Design? At first I thought you meant style of the LCD itself. You mean like engineering/CAD? LCDs will be more suited because they are perfectly accurate in the geometric sense.

I recommend the Samsung 21.3" 214T. Wide viewing angles and high contrast. Samsung 243T/244T (also same LCD as each other, different stand) is just as good if you want or don't mind 24" widescreen. The 213T is not the same as the 214T in this respect though; they are completely different models.

They can make CRTs thinner, sort of. There's rear projection CRT (a little thinner because it's deflected at a different angle), then there's SEDs coming out soon, but if you're not gaming, that makes an LCD all the more perfect for your purpose.
