I am hesistant to say that the lower the switching time, the better the image looks for gaming. The problem with that statement is manufacturers only advertise the switching time of going from black to white and vice versa. A more indicative measurement would be the average switching time of all colors to all other colors and back. You pretty much have to go and read reviews and see what people say about the level of ghosting. Tom's Hardware has done a few roundups on various LCD monitors.

I use a NEC 1700V and I'm pretty happy with that. no problwm with gosting, black to white is good, little bleeding of light on the edges of the screen when it's all black, but other than that, i think it's really good

I have the dell fp1900 and its an awesome LCD monitor. Minimal ghosting .. It's like your looking at a picture frame.

I have the dell 1900fp also...

Ghosting in CS is really bad. WHile UT2k3 is fine. I think this has to do with a games ability to support the native resolution of the lcd panel. The native res on the 1900fp is 1280x1024. CS doesnt support 1280x1024, while UT2k3 does. So if your games, and computer, support running it at that res, then you should be fine.

no such thing as a CRT being as thin as an LCD. They need the tube, the tube takes space. Now there are some "short depth designs but even those only shave a few inches at best. You still are going to have a monitor that goes back 16" for a 19" screen. No point in getting a "short depth" CRT. Can't change the physics of how a standard cathode ray tube works.

As stated, the interpolation issue with non-native LCD resolutions is better or worse depending on each brand's interpolation system. There is nothing, that I am aware of, that can be done one the computer end. It is purely a monitor issue at the moment and may always be due to the way an LCD and it's pixel/cells work.

Only way to get purely clear native style clarity while running a lower resolution screen is letterboxing. Thats no fun. If the non-native interpolation is really bothering you, get a CRT. A new graphics card will help a little but not alot. You already have a good card. Only a top model card like a 9700 TX or 9700 pro and (I assume) Nforce will give you substantial performance over the geforce 4200 ti. Buying a CRT for gaming is probably the best way to go regardless. It sucks but that's part of the give and take of LCD's.

because the bezel is so thin, i have the same monitor. I've kinda outgrown CS and now i have been playing more strat based game were u dont have to worry about ghosting. The picture on my monitor just seems more vivid and brighter than my roommates, he has a Samsung 955DF.

Take a look at:

Hitachi CML174 or Planar PX171M -- both 17" LCDs boasting 16ms (12 up/4 down) response times... of course, response times aren't the be all end all of a good LCD and may in and of themselves be misleading.

It'd be nice if there was a store where you could do some side by side comparison of these screens. Oh well.

what exactly makes lcd not as good as crt in the first place? Besides the resolution problems... What would I want to look for when buying an LCD ?

Sony Personal Entertainment display. 22ms, 17" widescreen display. It has all sorts of inputs (s-video, component) comes with outstanding built-in speakers that are about equal to my $100 digital 2.1 system. It is THE BRIGHTEST display I have ever used, backlight at 10 will start to hurt your eyes after a few minutes... but it's adjustable, and the backlight at 0 is about as bright as my mom's cheapo 15" lcd. I have it hooked up via components to my PS2 which looks great. Native resolution is 1280x768 wide or 1024x768 full (2 vertical black bars so image isnt stretched). It can be had for about $750 new on eBay, any retailer is significantly higher. But the ghosting is better when compared to Samsung 191T, DVD quality is absolutely incredible... (last night watching Swordfish my friend commented that it looked "better than real life" =) )

Anyway, I got one for Christmas and it's the best display I've ever used.
