I need to hang about 10 pictures at my GF's place, and wanted a laser level, since it can be hard without one (depending on the type of mounting).

I was looking at the Craftsman X3 level, but I read that some craftsman levels dry out (the vials).

So anyone an expert?

Measuring tape from the ceiling. Pencil. Spend the rest of the budget on candles, long stemmed roses, and condoms. 😉

What is you're budget? A good quality laser can be had for as little as $300. For hanging pictures, do as Nik suggested and measure down from the ceiling.

I clicked because I saw the word "pics".

Laser Levels are cheap gimmicks.
They don't work very well and you will never use it after your first attempt.

Use a tape measure you sissy.

This. After doing things the "hard" way, I thought I'd save time and use a laser level. Everything ended up crooked and I ended up doing it the old fashioned way anyway. Though, it was a cheap laser level. Maybe you'll have better results if you spend a little.

People are so anal that they need guidance from light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation just to hang some fucking pictures? You know they built the pyramids at Giza with knowledge of just 6 simple machines, right? Surely, you can hang some pictures without using Tomahawk cruise missle guidance technology.

I'm going to guess you don't have a long history in construction. Laser levels are anything but a "cheap gimmick". I don't know a contractor that doesn't have one and use it regularly. Mine was an inexpensive model at around $400, and it's saved me many hours of work.

Buying one to hang pictures is a complete waste, but if you happen to be a contractor, they're a valuable tool indeed.

An expensive laser level is a complete waste of money for your needs. Just buy a fricken box level and use that. Christ, I have a 36" level in my garage that I bought 10+ years ago. Still works everytime and I think it cost me about $30.
