Well I dont know what the "best" is, but like you, im looking for something with what you
have in mind. Ive come across a mitac 8050.

So far ive found these companies that make them. There is also rumor that
abspc will have these out too sometime this month. prices range alot between these
places, try to config something you are looking for, it might just fit your budget.
As for me...im gonna wait for abspc and see what happens. if you find any other
places that sale these, lemme know.

EDIT: one more thing, i think this laptop comes with onboard video, so if you want a gaming video
card, make sure you put one in the config!

I suggest keeping an eye on Dell's website for a nice promotion you can get the 8600 with a bunch of nice stuff in it (1.6 Pentium M, 1024 RAM (if you buy from crucial and install yourself), ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo 128 MB) for about 1700-1800 when they have a nice promotion going on. What they have now stinks IMO, and I am still waiting for a killer deal!

I would jump on the dell 8600 if it only had spdif, one more usb, and i didnt have to pay taxes. but it looks like a great centrino notebook

My only issue with the Mitac would be max 1gb ram and shared video memory.. Other than that it should do what u want. My other sugges would be the dell if you want a known system. There are many companys out there that custom systems here are a few.

Xtreme notebooks
Hyper Data
Direct PC

Just to name a few.

Get a USB splitter, and buy it from Dell Home.... Thats normally no taxes....

I understand i can get a usb splitter or even a hub, but i much prefer everything
on board to reduce clutter and make it more travel friendly....i know...im picky!

i am in texas, tax is all there.

spdif or S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) is digital, so if it had "spdif out" i could hook it up to my 5.1 receiver
and enjoy digital sound.

NO WAY! dell.com posts:

Audio jacks: Stereo headphones/speakers miniconnector (same as line-out), microphone miniconnector

is it on the port replicator or built in? is it optical or coxial?

The dell 8500/8600 does come with a Digital Audio out..

The machine ships with a port replicator.

Did you take a look at ibuypower? Their prices seem pretty reasonable... good reseller ratings too. Of course, no Dell coupon available with them!

This.

It's pretty much the best right now. 9700 with P-M AND lightweight. Doesn't get any better than this. I don't know if its been released yet, however.

No doubt, Hypersonic CX6.

www.hypersonic-pc.com

P-M 1.7, Radeon 9700 128 meg, and all the other goodies. UPgradeable and Dothan compatible, wicked package. GOGO click link! :)

*Edit, erh didn't see your budget limitation. I think you should save up, or forget about getting a nice rig.
