I'm wavering... even if just the CF worked, this would be a pretty good deal for me. Still, better safe than sorry, I think... i'd love to hear if anyone on this thread has a positive experience with it.
 
I was just going to say that the Soyo looks like a winner - flash memory reader/writer + front usb ports

Unfortunately, the flash reader/writer is usb 1.1 🙁
 
the card reader comes with a cable that is too short to be used on alot of motherboards especially the asus boards. it seems to be designed specifically for ecs motherboards. this should be taken into consideration before purchase. although it is a good idea the engineering team behind this hardware really screwed up. save your money and pass on this purchase.

I've seen this several times where New Egg deletes negative product reviews. :|
A year ago, I would have been all over this deal, but after using a USB 2 reader, there's no going back.
 
The one star review shows up when I view the page. It mostly says the cable is too short and the engineering team screwed up.

The problem with the SanDisk is that it does not work on USB 2.0, as advertised. It will disconnect randomly after a period of time...

Neither printers nor cameras tend to be particularly fast as card readers...they tend to have slower processors managing the data flow. I can read pictures off of CompactFlash faster through a PQI 6-in-1 reader than through the Nikon Coolpix 995 that uses the cards. (The reader is the USB 1.1 variant, of course...USB 2.0 is a waste of time. FireWire's where it's at if you need more speed than USB 1.1 can deliver. 😀 )

(The thing that pissed me off about the PQI reader when I installed it, though, is that the driver must be installed before you plug it in. If it isn't installed and you plug it in, you'll never get it working without a wipe-and-reinstall of whatever OS you're using. :| )

I have the Sandisk and haven't had a problem with it. It's way faster than my old 1.1 readers. BTW, the 6-In-1 is somewhat misleading in that it won't read Microdrives. Sandisk counts CF I & II seperately.

Hmm, a few months back they had a deal on this unit at Amazon - I remember a big discussion on this forum where multiple people had a similar problem - the unit would act as if it has been disconnected (at least in Win2k), after a *random* amout of time, as far as I could tell. Also, my unit does not read 16MB CF Lexar cards... The disconnect does not happen under USB 1.1, I wonder if I got a bad unit, or maybe it is a general incompatibility with something in my system?
Don - what MB do you have - I've got the Gigabyte 7VRXP.

Was this the "6 in 1" or the "4 in 1"? I find it hard to believe even Frys would be offering the "6 in 1" unit FAR already...

Having picked up the "4 in 1" awhile back, it's great- of course now I purchased a 2nd camera that needs a SD reader- which the "4 in 1" doesn't read 🙁
 
I bought one of these and the cord was too short. I thought I would be "smart" and just splice in some extra cable. Well long story short the card read was detected fine by my OS (WinXP) but the card reader would NOT read SD. I checked newegg and a customer also had the same problem (without the cut cable) and returned it, now I cannot return it as I have already cut the cord 🙁 I did open the unit and there are two places to plug the USB header on the circuit board, I will move the usb to the second header to see if that makes a difference. Oh well, even if it is a dud I am pnly out $16 for my troubles.

So, in conclusion stay away as I have not heard anything overtly possitive about this unit.
 
OK, quick ballistics report on the Iwill CR611 6 in 1 Reader for $22 from Newegg.

The thing is tiny, about 3" x 2 1/2" x 1/2". I plugged it in to my XP machine and it was detected automatically. I threw in a smart media card, a Canon SD card, and a Lexar 128mb Memory stick - it can read all of them at the same time, pretty cool. I don't think my Dazzle 6 in 1 can do that.

My Dazzle 6 in 1 chokes on my Lexar memory stick where the Iwill does not. I hate putting my smart media card in my Dazzle - it's too tight a fit and almost scratches the card. It goes in nice and easy on the Iwill.

The only downside to the Iwill is that the USB cable is only about 8" long - but that's because it's designed to fit in the little leather case that comes with it. I'll just pick up an extension at Costco next time I am there.

All in all a pretty worthy option for $22, especially if you want something to throw in a camera bag, laptop bag. or shirt pocket.
 
Read the reviews on NewEgg, they're all bad!

Thought this would be the way to go but, alas, like another user reported, only the CF slot powers-up. This is definitely an issue that should be considered. If this is an engineering defect (maybe only works with certain ECS MBs), the specs should say so. The cost to RMA return is not worth the hassle. Oh well.

Installed fine, CF reader worked, SD didn't power up at all. I returned it for my money back.
