Best bang-for-the-buck joystick that I've had was a Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 that I picked up for $2.50 at a thrift store.

Better question, what hardware combo exists that can even run this "game" smoothly at 1600x1200 with FSAA?
Dual Core system (4mb cache), 4GB RAM, and I think it actually helps if you have Vista for memory management. As for the video card, you need a HUGE one...preferably with DDR3.

As for the Joystick question, I recommend force feedback. I can handle doing without a yoke and rudder pedals as long as the handle has a decent twist option for the rudder.

The one thing my current joystick(Logitech Force3d) doesn't have that I wish it had was a throttle that can go in reverse.

why would you need one to go in reverse?

reverse thruster, pushback

EDIT: I'd love one that had prop control, mixture, and RPM, but those are too pricy.

The thing you are thinking of is called a "plane"

If you are really into this game, and want the pilot experience as opposed to "all the other flying sims", get a yoke and foot pedals. (I think CH makes them.)

When I say all the other sims, I am talking about fighter jets, helo's, and combat oriented flight sims where you actually use a joystick in the real plane. For the most part, flight simulator is commercial type aircraft except for the helo and add-on aircraft. When is the last time you saw a joystick in the cabin of a 737?

P.S. Get TrackIR, You'll love it.
