theres nothing wrong with itunes. install multi-plugin and its fine

the horror stories? some twits that don't read during install and select let itunes organize music and are have it rearrange their music folders😛 well thats their fault.

Blaming the beginning user for having enormous problems with the default settings of software specifically designed for beginners is ridiculous, and shows just how far out of touch with reality this argument is.

these aren't beginners, these are anandtechers😛 beginners probably wouldn't mind letting itunes reorganize their music since they wouldn't want to manually bother with such stuff.

Not all ATers are pros, and besides the OP said it's for his wife, not him, and we've no idea where she heard horror stories about itunes. While beginning users may like automated organization - they may not. They should at least have the choice, rather than it being almost automatic unless they know beforehand about this option and uncheck it (which would imply they're not beginners in the first place).

Why does everyone assume you have to install Quicktime with iTunes? They come in standalone packages.

There's nothing wrong with iTunes, other than it being rather bloated software. It pairs with the iPod perfectly, as it was designed to. Plus their legal music selection cannot be beat.

They do? I guess you have to go somewhere special on the site then, because if you go to the normal itunes download page it bundles quicktime in the download.

Indeed, the links to separate packages are difficult to find, by design.

And there's nothing good about DRM.

Aye, Apple wants you to use iTunes with Quicktime. Nothing wrong with a company wanting you to use their software. 😛 The standalone links are on the same page as the regular links, just much smaller and off to the site.

While I hate DRM, Apple's is the least restrictive, aside from completely illegal downloading MP3s. With iTunes you can play the music on up to 5 computers at the same time and burn an infinite number of CDs with them.

If you were to DL the songs in Lossless format, burn them to a CD, rip them to MP3, there would be no DRM at all.

Well guys's Im not a novice at this stuff, but consider that I have to take two approaches to getting this to work:
1. I must make the wife happy. 2. Must keep pregnant wife happy. We have two 30GB Video Ipods and I really like the mediamonkey + rockbox idea, there is a certain coolnesssn factor and what the heck, there isn't a single other device that I haven't put a rebel firmware on in the house( xbox, wrt54g, 6800NU etc. ) so what's one more?? 😉 but then I have to go back to rule #1 with #2 in mind. In order to do that I needed to have something ready to go that she would use, and she had a couple of friends that mentioned itunes biting the big one, and from a lot of forums I was inclidned to agree that it wasn't going to work best for me. What I am planning on doing is using ehpod or media monkey to manage the music and then flash one of the iopds to rckbox and check it out. That way I get the best of both worlds - a happy pregnant wife who will be so happy to have her music that she will not crush my desires to bring more gadgets into the home.

thanks everyone for their input , it really has given me a lot to chew on !!!
