Best IPOD software

Does anyone have an opinion on the best software to use with my wifes new ipod? She'd heard some horror stories about itunes and wnated to know what else there might be out there? We have a few thousand MP3's that need to be sorted and copied over, but before i got too deep into it I was wondering what anyone else though I should use.

Many thanks in advance

What kinds of horror stories has she heard about iTunes? I haven't noticed any problems (although I don't own an iPod).

should not have bought an ipod then =/

Indeed. But now that it's there, there are plenty of options. Ephpod is a good standalone program and there are plugins for winamp, foobar and even wmp I believe.

You sure?

I would think with even itunes fans admitting there's a better sounding alternative the reality would be somewhat clear. Add itunes' bloat and the fact it comes with quicktime to the sound quality issue and it can't be much more obvious.

Don't believe the Apple fanboys.

I use an application called Anapod Explorer (http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/)

It lets you view all of the content on your iPod via a windows explorer like interface so you can just drag and drop files onto it.

I couldn't figure out a way to do this with iTunes (the last version of iTunes I used was a version from last year so this could've changed). I had to click a checkbox next to the songs I wanted to upload to the iPod and click an update button at the top, which I didn't like at all.

Anapod is better than ephpod but both are really not that great compared to plain old iTunes. The only reason I would say not to use iTunes is if you are going to use Rockbox on the pod.

iTunes sounds fine to me. 😕

How big is iTunes? Can't be bigger than most of the new games out there...

Quicktime doesn't cause me any issues. Maybe it's you. 😛

iTunes is still the best choice. I am neither an apple fanboy nor a hater. I use what is most convenient for what the task is. iTunes and MyTunes are best for me.

Well I did check out the link questar provided and was just about to choose anapod until looking around the forums it seems their support is beginning to become bad as of late, so im not sure I want to spend my money there. That J river media center does look neat though - does anyone have an opinion on that??

Lol, what?? Ephpod is free and there are free plugins for all the major players, which are also free... as an Apple customer do you just feel uncomfortable not overpaying for something? 😕

Yeah, that is true. I had problems with anapod and sent them an email requesting a refund because it was not doing what I wanted. Or if they wouldn't give me a refund, some actual help. It has been a month and I have received no reply.

LOL bachman, no actually this is the first time Im an apple customer and normally my FIRST search si for free. I also knwo that if I don't set this up nicely that my wife will simply not sue it or bug me about it, so Im exploering all of my options first. I am looking at Ephpod and then someone also mentioned mediaMonkey once upon a time.

Why does everyone assume you have to install Quicktime with iTunes? They come in standalone packages.

There's nothing wrong with iTunes, other than it being rather bloated software. It pairs with the iPod perfectly, as it was designed to. Plus their legal music selection cannot be beat.

theres nothing wrong with itunes. install multi-plugin and its fine

the horror stories? some twits that don't read during install and select let itunes organize music and are have it rearrange their music folders😛 well thats their fault.

Blaming the beginning user for having enormous problems with the default settings of software specifically designed for beginners is ridiculous, and shows just how far out of touch with reality this argument is.
