I'm looking to purchase a CD featuring the compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach. Preferably something introductory, covering a range of his pieces. What would you recommend for someone new to his music?

I plan on recreating much of Bach's music with the screams of my victims. It shall be called "The Symphony of Pain". It will be wonderful.

You scare me. And I'm not referring to your post.

Brandenburg Concertos
Toccata in D minor (phantom of the opera)
Jesu, joy of man's desire

There is so much to choose from.

Brandenburg Concertos - very nice music, the performance I have on CD is old, there are probably better ones released since then.

My favorite Bach CD is a set of works for lute performed by Sharon Isbin on solo guitar - Amazon ASIN: B00008LP1Q

Hopefully, he just has some developmental issues and will eventually outgrow this stage.

I used to have Classical Thunder on CD

I dunno where it is, but that's good stuff.

For all of his cello works, Yo-Yo Ma's interpretations are of course spectacular. For example, his cellos suites:

I'm personally a big fan of Hilary Hahn's recordings of his violin sonatas & partitas (not complete, though):

However, others will prefer the more classic performances of say Milstein or Szeryng:

There is also the more authentic baroque interpretations, played on period instruments. For example,

i have the entire Classical Thunder Collection, 32 CDs of greatness

I'm a fan of the music of "Sir Neville Mariner and The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields."

Not sure if you'll find what you're looking for in their catalog or not, but it'd be worth a look.
