Best internet browser for linux

bmacd

Lifer
i have mandrake 8.2 and don't like konquerer. I know they don't make IE for linux (yet 😛), so what do you guys suggest?

Actually, you can use IE in Linux, Link, but why would you? Try netscape, mozilla (based on netscape), galeon (based on mozilla), opera, lynx, or any of the other browsers.

I, like derango use mozilla, in both windows and linux.

I use Mozilla for most things. I like Galeon alot better, but it keeps crashing on me(gonna try recompiling it). Mozilla.org's Phoenix looks very promising also. Konqueror is alright, I use it for some things. I like how it applies your selected Qt style to webpages. The Konq in 3.1beta's is nicer because it has tabbed browsing.

At this very moment, I'd say galeon is best (though I've had trouble getting it working in the past; still, after it is up and running it's a good browser. requires mozilla though).

At the rate it's progressing though, in another 3 weeks Phoenix will be best on Linux and give IE a good run for it's money on Windows (you'll be able to use it without looking back if you're trying to go open source on windows. I know that's a contradiction but some people want to use open source they just can't bring themselves to dump windows). It's also a lightweight mozilla-based browser, but it seems to hack around with the mozilla code more. Galeon requires mozilla be installed, whereas Phoenix just includes whatever files from mozilla it uses. Give it a try. Version 0.2 is currently out and version 0.3 is supposed to come out tommorow (nothing guaranteed on volunteer projects though). I can almost guarantee I'll be using it exclusively on Linux very soon. The same team also mentioned creating a seperate, slim version of the Mozilla mail client as well, which would be an awesome thing. Kmail is good as it is so I won't complain (Evolution is a little too bloated for me. It's a great Outlook clone but I've never liked Outlook either), but choices are always good.

I prefer Galeon, uses Gecko(Mozillas rendering engine) so you get the standards compliance of Mozilla, but without the rather bulky GUI.

Oh and Netscape is based on Mozilla, not the other way around, just nitpicking 😉

Mozilla was started by Netscape. If I remember correctly, Mozilla is/was the code name for the open source that was released by Netscape. You are right though, new versions of Netscape have been based on Mozilla.

Yeah, the Mozilla project was started by Netscape, and Netscape have used the name "Mozilla" since forever 🙂

IIRC, Mozilla was the code name for the netscape browser from the very begging. I don't remember if it was marketing or what that made them use Navigator for the browser, however the internal name for the sourcecode was always Mozilla.
