Best Ingredients For Homemade Pizza

I made a pizza last night for dinner and it just tasted kind of bland. It wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't great. I bought Boboli pizza dough, Ragu plain tomatoe sauce and Sargenta mozzarella cheese. The GF doesn't like anything in her sauce so plain tomatoe sauce has to stay.

Any suggestions?

What's "Ragu plain tomato" sauce? Spaghetti sauce or pizza sauce? Use pizza sauce, not spaghetti sauce. Or make your own sauce like Codewiz suggested (although that is time-consuming)

It was spaghetti sauce. Is there a difference between spaghetti sauce and pizza sauce?

Yes. Don't use spaghetti sauce. Pizza sauce, or at the very least, marinara is the way to go.

Your problem was when you bought pre-made items like the crust and sauce instead of making them yourself. Use fresh ingredients and find a good recipe and you will taste a dramatic difference.

I don't know what the difference is, but they taste very different to me.

Yeah, it takes all of 20 minutes to make sauce. Dough taks more time. So instead of making a pizza in 20 total minutes, you take about 40 minutes. I would never use premade pizza sauce.

Just a warning if you do decide to try to make your own dough - the pan you use will make all the difference in the world. Put it on a cookie sheet and you'll end up with terrible pizza. Even some of the dedicated pizza pans I've used have been junk. A pizza stone is perfect for New York style crust. I usually make my crust very thin - for that I've found that a pan with large perforations (~1cm) works best.

Plain tomato sauce is fine...it's what they use in Italy. You need to use better cheese. Get the fresh stuff packed in water. Toss on a few leaves of basil before cooking (remove after it's done) or sprinkle on finely chopped basil after cooking.

I make a homemade pizza nearly once a week. I wouldn't touch what you just described.

1) The crust would be a maybe, prepackaged stuff isn't too bad. But if you really wanted to go all out, make your own crust.

2) The sauce is a definate no. Spaghetti sauce isn't pizza sauce. You need spices and flavorings in the sauce or it will taste bland. If you can't put things in it (chopped garlic and onion are a must) because of your GF, try hiding stuff in the sauce (garlic powder, cayenne pepper, ground pepper, etc). Also, if the sauce tastes strongly of tomatoes, you need to add salt.

3) Your topping was lacking. I hope at least it wasn't that preshredded stuff. If you think it is boring, why didn't you add flavor there? It takes less than five mintues from start to end to roast some peppers, grape tomatoes, onions, etc. If you really want to go all out, you can roast garlic in maybe 15 mintues (it takes more time to peel and cut it). Then just toss them on. But then, I find maranara pizza to be quite boring.

1) Put a pizza cooking stone into your oven and preheat to 500 degrees F.
2) Onto a standard Boboli pizza crust, add a generous amount of extra virgin olive oil, enough to cover the entire surface.
3) Now add to this layer (in desired quantities) salt, ground black pepper, oregano, and crushed red pepper (scatter ingedients onto entire pizza).
4) Crush at least 3 garlic cloves and add it to the above.
5) Slice a few sun dried tomatoes and add it to the above.
6) Perhaps add a few chopped black olives.
7) Thinly slice 1-2 fresh tomatoes and add to the above.
8) Add to the above about 12 thin pepperoni slices.*
9) Scatter fresh mozzarella cheese over the entire thing such that it covers all the above.
10) Grate some fresh parmesan reggiano cheese over the mozzarella.
11) Put pizza into oven on pizza stone. Turn down oven to 350 F.
12) Let the pizza bake for about 20-30 minutes or until cheese is a little brown.

*If you are a vegetarian, it's fun to replace the pepperoni with roasted eggplant slices: Slice eggplant into thin pennies and bake in olive oil, salt, and pepper at high heat.

Edit: Fresh basil is also always a good idea.

Pizza in the US is better than pizza in Italy, and we use spices in our sauce.

Add some fresh chopped oregano to the pizza. Also, a little garlic powder and salt never hurt.

I make a pizza with no sauce using sliced roma tomatos, 1 chopped jalepeno pepper, some chopped green onion, a few cloves of roasted garlic, salt, pepper, and olive oil. Mix all these ingredients and refrigerate for about 30 minutes. Prepare crust and bake until lightly browned, spread ingredients over crust and sprinkle with feta cheese. Bake for another 10 minutes and enjoy. It's really good. One of our favorites.

Simmer that for 30 minutes instead of refrigerating it and you have a near perfect pizza sauce.

Basically, your "sauceless" pizza is just all sauce.
