How cheap is cheap? I really really like TopStyle. It's only $80 too. Dreamweaver and GoLive CS are also really nice but they're a few hundred bucks each.

Do you want me to PM them and ask them to ban you? I don't mind. :)

My favorite is Arachnophilia, it is free and works good for beginners and advanced users alike.

Piracy is caused by the companies. Who in their right mind would buy Photoshop for its ridiculous price! I know several kids who have used a bootleg version of photoshop and it has made them create some very unique things. Sometimes these companies dont realize that if they made their software affordable more people would buy it.

Look at Maya for instance, they were smart enough to give away a free version of their software because the more people that learn how to use it the more people will use it when they get to the professional arena.

Also...its a given fact of life that people are going to steal. Being strict on illegal activities is one thing, but being obsessive and banning anybody who mentions it is also very detrimental to society. If I made an off topic post, "What would be your favorite way to rob a bank" I doubt it would get taken down.

Ty for ur input on the software choices.

There are plenty of piracy related threads in the archives. Not sure we need to rehash the points on each side. Either way it is morally and legally wrong to violate copyrights. If someone can't own something and do with it as they wish, what's the point in making anything?

Wrong, it's caused by kids that think they need something but shouldn't have to pay for it. And by kids I mean the mental mindset of pirates.

People that need it. People that respect copyright. People that don't know there are alternatives out there for most of us.

I know several kids who have used a bootleg version of photoshop and it has made them create some very unique things.

And the GIMP wouldn't? And paying for it makes it less useful?

I bet they know the economics of it better than the unwashed masses do.

And you can get Personal Editions of Photoshop. I got one with a hard drive.

Yes, people will steal, but that has nothing to do with piracy.

Being strict on illegal activities is one thing, but being obsessive and banning anybody who mentions it is also very detrimental to society.

The mental midgets that pirate software deserve the respect they give others. ie. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

If I made an off topic post, "What would be your favorite way to rob a bank" I doubt it would get taken down.

You never know. The mods here are a wierd bunch, and without a hard fast set of rules, they can do whatever they want to whomever they want.

Ty for ur input on the software choices.

I figured offering free alternatives to proprietary offerings might be a good thing. It helps prove that there are alternatives to the great big "fvck you" to the children of payware authors. ;)

Code - Any decent code editor will suffice.
WYSIWYG/Code - Dreamweaver is used by most professionals, but GoLive is also pretty popular.
WYSIWYG - Frontpage is probably the easiest program to use.

Best HTML Editor for Cheap $$$

Back to the question at hand.

You can probably track down an older copy of Dreamweaver for a good price. Check EBay, and maybe ask in the FS/FT forum. Someone is bound to have an older copy. For basic html editing, the old Dreamweaver versions do that just fine.

I used to like Arachnophilia which was suggested by someone above, but it got kind of sloppy feeling to me when it was re-authored in Java.

My favorite nowadays is HTML-Kit.

Ernie

PS: Gee, I hate it when people do what I just did. I neglected to say WHY I like HTML-Kit. It is so cusomizable (like Arachnophilia in that regard) that you can make it suit your particular work style when creating markup or code. It's also very fast and responsive, and it has some really interesting extra features -- like the Prototype Pad into which you can paste just about anything from a formatted document and create a prototype html output. It's a very interesting little gadget. Also comes in handy when trying to save formatted text from Web pages. It often works much better than doing a File | Save As from your browser.

Are you able to get educational prices? Dreamweaver is definately my favourite. It includes TopStyle Lite as well :)

There's also *shudder*, Frontpage. With Themes and stuff, it makes it very easy to create an "attractive" website in no time.

I'll second this one. You can't be this piece of software when it's free. If you can afford it, go with Dreamweaver.
