Best HSF combo?

I'm sorry if this question has been asked a hundred times but what is the best HSF combo for $50 or less? I need to cool an XP2100+ which I am overclocking in an MSI K7T Turbo2 board. I'm kinda stumped because I have a Thermalright SK-6 on right now and my temps are in the 60's! They can get as high as the 70's when the CPU is pushed. I know this is way too high but I thought that I had a pretty decent HS. I don't know what type of fan I have but it is an 80mm one which I use with an adapter. The fan is not loud and doesn't seem too powerful though I'm not sure because I have nothing to compare it's power too. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Do you have any sort of thermal grease between the cpu and the heatsink, or some thermal pad? I have seen that problem as well as the heatsink not seated properly, but your temps are too high.

You shouldn't need much paste, I would check and see if the HS is making good contact with the processor. Maybe it's on backwards, I seem to do that alot.... ;) esp here lately. Had the Volcano9 on backwards, and that's why I had some high temps for a while.

I don't see how it can be on backward as the heatsink is a large flat surface with no orientation and the fan is blowing down.

i'm pretty sure its not the heatsink, because the sk6 is still one of the top coolers around. You should reapply thermal compound and make sure that the heatsink is on correctly.

most of the HSFs I've dealt with on Socket A platforms are notched to clear the ZIF lever mechanism..maybe that's just me tho ...

I figured out my mistake guys!!!! Like an idiot I installed the HSF incorrectly. The HSF was on top of the white plastic and lever thingy, what a newbie mistake! Anyway my temps have dropped about 20 degrees celsius which is pretty substantial. I'm now running at 41 celsius while moderately overclocked. Thanks for the help.

sorry for hijacking this thread.... but i'm wondering if my cpu is running a little too hot.

Got a TB 750.. at default speed, the cpu temp is running at 57-62
Overclock fsb only, the temp goes up as high as 62-64

I've got a global win cooler... donno the model no but its pretty old. I also installed 2 case fans and i exhaust fan on my system with good air flow.

Whats the average temp for this cpu and do I need a better HSF?

Thanks

That seems high. With a good HSF combo you should be running somewhere in the 40's. Check to see if the HSF is laying flat on the core and not on top of any the white plastic socket. This is what happened to me, I had the HSF resting on the plastic and it was only making partial contact with the CPU. Also make sure you use a good quality thermal grease like Arctic Silver. Finally, you may need to replace your HSF but a 750mhz chip should not require a whole lot of cooling.
