amazing.

FTW! This is what I was going to list. Slasher, et. al. horror doesn't do it for me in the least but psychological terror with minimal FX is far superior IMO and this movie has it.

Frontieres and Hautes Tension (High Tension) were both pretty intense movies. Not scary horror but more like messed up horror wtf flicks

IT
Hellraiser

Then again, I watched those when I was a kid..

The only movies that has scared me as a grown-up, are:

The sixth sense
Training Day (When the officer is left behind @ that apartment...)

then you will probably like The Changeling. A haunted house/ghost story with a very disturbing murder scene of a boy in his bathtub.

also I would recommend:

The Innocents

Black Christmas

The Shining is the best PURE Horror movie out there (not "shock movie") The whole thing in its 70s vibe is creepy as hell. Its the only roll I like Jack in too.

Inside hands down. A must-see for all fans of the genre.

Inside is one of the best French horror films I have ever seen! It ranks up there as well as one of my best horror films ever as well. It is very intense and bloody.

You're seriously calling "Terminator" a horror movie? 😕

I would hesitate to classify any movies as "horror", as I have yet to be horrified by a film.

The single-minded, unstoppable, unkillable monster happens to be a machine from the future, so it's sci-horror. Overall the film is built as a horror movie though.

There are many movies that somewhat defy classification. What would you say The Road Warrior is? I say it's a western, despite being set in the future and no one is packing a six shooter.

Friday the 13th
Halloween
Hellraiser
Psycho
The Ring
Saw
The Shining
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1973)

While I understand some people may themselves not be overly scared/horrified at a film, I think that it's safe to classify as "horror" a film that is meant to provoke terror or dread in the viewer, and usually there's some sort of nightmarish monster involved (ie Michael Meyers in Halloween, Leatherface in Texas Chainsaw Massacre).
