I'm looking for the best Heat sink/Fan for my Phenom 2 940. I think I want to stick around $50 or less. Any recommendations?

That's a loaded question. The TR TRUE seems to be really popular. Xigmatek also. The biggest question you'll need to answer is whether or not whatever HSF you look at will fit properly on your motherboard. (The stock cooler supposedly isn't all that bad either)

The biggest problem you're going to have with that motherboard is the ram getting in the way of a lot of bigger heatsinks. I have an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro and the fan barely clears the first DIMM.

In case you're curious... Phenom II 940 at stock with that cooler is running ~32C idle and 48C full load. I will be shopping for something a bit better as time progresses. :)

Most of the tower coolers should work with the board as the fins are usually raised above the actual ram. If not, you can just mount the cooler parallel to the ram slots.

I'd recommend the Xigmatek S1283, its like 36.99 with free shipping at the egg

Here's a review of the cooler:

If you plan to up the voltages with your overclock, I'd really recommend getting some heatsinks on the mosfets. They get really hot.

Agreed on the Xigmatek S1283. Got mine on that same deal ($37 + free ship). Dropped my load temps by more than 15C.

The TRUE is way better than the 1283. I have both, trust me.

$37 vs $55 (couldn;t price at newegg, used svc.com)

Yes, 50% more, not 100% more, but its worth it if you overclock. He did ask for the "best" right in the title. Then he says around $50 or less, and I think 55 is close enough. $45 for the not extreme version.

hmm choices, choices.....$55 isn't out of range. It's around what I want to spend. But is the almost $20 difference really worth it?

You going to need to add a fan to that TRUE, so the difference is greater than what you're showing.

Ah, didn't realize. I looked on Google Shopping and the lowest price was $60-something, I think.

But yeah, worth bringing up.

Correct, the TRUE does not come with a fan. The Xigmatek or the Vendetta 2 are both much cheaper and perform nearly as good or better then the TRUE (with a fan) depending on the review. They are also lighter than the TRUE and I hear that the true is not very flat on the bottom out of the box and so needs to be lapped.

Basically the Xig and the V2 were modeled after the older TRUE and made some improvements to the design.
