No prob. Just a recovering audiophile trying to pass on some helpful advice.

Why didn't you tell 'em about the matching $10K source, $5K amp, $2K ICs, $3K power plant, and $1K power cable for the R10 and Orpheus?

No doubt. I saw the title and wondered just how many thousands the OP was willing to drop. I mean, he asked for the absolute best right? Then I saw all the posts about $50 headphones and was

Ophir's post was very good. Personally, I prefer sealed cans. After all, I usually put my headphones on so that I don't disturb my SO while I'm gaming or listening to my music. If I thought she wanted to listen too, I'd turn on the speakers.

Exactly. Most people don't really care about their source or phones when listening to music using headphones. I sold my speakers so I use 100% headphones at the gym, work, and even home. I admit, it's a bit of a hassle sometimes.

Enjoying my MS-2i's right now. Will pick up a Sony SA5000 as soon as I can.

Would call that entry level. Not unusual for high quality cans to run into several hundreds or thousands of dollars rather easily.

Look to the SR60 or the SR80.

Also look to the search function. Has been covered numerous times.

The 80's are my dream phones, ones that I actually could buy anyway. I still think the bass is a little thin on them, but they are awesome sounding headphones. My Sennheiser's (can't remember the model right now, about 120 buck ones) sound really bad compared to the SR60 or 80's.

Heh, there's a difference between not being able to afford the best, and settling for crap:)

You can usually find Sennheisser HD-280s for aroun $75. The best closed cans at that price range... or just about any range...

yup. Stax Omega IIs + Gilmore electrostatic amp. A good $4 grand or so just for the cans. Here's a review:

Tube and non-tube Gilmores available here:

If you're on a smaller budget, a lighter-weight Gilmore and the Sennheiser HD-650s is a good choice. HeadRoom also carries a nice line of AirHead portable amps available here:

Grados are excellent, but I prefer the comfort of Sennheiser. I have Sennheiser HD-570s, which run fine without an amp. Very comfortable, can be had for under $100, and sound absolutely fantastic.
