I'm currently listening to mp3s at the school, using those giant headphones that they provide, and I notice that the sound quality is so much better then the earbuds that I use.

clarity is very good, and I can almost distinctivly hear all the background instruments very clearly. are the headphones usuallly better then the ear buds?

what is the best quality headphones? I'll only listen to them at home...so size and looks doesn't matter...just quality

I'm POSITIVE that price matters. So post a price, and we can make recommendations.

I like Sennheisers, myself. Try the HD280s.

Would call that entry level. Not unusual for high quality cans to run into several hundreds or thousands of dollars rather easily.

Look to the SR60 or the SR80.

Also look to the search function. Has been covered numerous times.

Open: Grado SR-60, Senn HD 497
Closed: Sony V6, Senn HD 212

Out of those, I'll take the Grados.

Sennheiser HD 280 (closed) or
Grado SR60 or SR80 (open)

edit: out of these only SR60 are below $75 all the time, but IIRC from time to time there are deals on HD 280 for $80 or so that is close to your price range

Audio Technicas for closed, but I think you can only get them from audiocubes, unless you can find used ones (which get snapped up really quick on head-fi)

$45 for the HD212's. Then again, I liked closed;)
$45 is hard to beat.

The sound out of my SR-60s is so beautiful, though, the extra $25 is worth it. Only downside is they are only useful indoors, IMO they are pretty sh!tty outdoors.

what's the difference between open and closed headphones? both look like they go over your ears.

i went recently with the Sony MDR-V6 ( theyve been around for ~20 years, tons of reviews around ) for $69.99. Theyre supposed to be just rebadged 'Pro' MDR-7506.
Cant be happier with the sound, very good isolation too. They do completely surround your ears though.

Might want to check out the Koss ksc 75s, they aren't as expensive or look that expensive, but they give a lot of bang for the buck, close to the $60 headphones mentioned above. The ksc35s, ksc50s, 55s, and koss kthxpro1 are all similiar I think. They sound nice and are pretty cheap to boot, although I must admit I have a pair of HD-280s and a pair of grado sr-60s and love them both. :)

You do realize you can't hide right? We'll just train dogs using equalizers with the highs and lows turned way down to find you.

Open/Closed doesn't refer to how the go on your ears (that's supra-aural vs circumaural). It refers to the design of the earpiece, typically the chamber behind the headphones. In an open headphone, the chamber is vented to the atmosphere, in a closed headphone it is sealed.

Each provides pros and cons. Open cans tend to be more airy, with a larger soundstage; sealed cans block out external noise much better (which makes open phones useless outdoors, or in any noisy environment). Higher end headphones are generally exclusively open-type. Of course, there are exceptions to these rules, like the closed $4000 Sony MDR-R10.

That being said, most people would be very happy with a quality sealed can (and NEVER notice if the soundstage is "smaller" or if it lacks "airyness").

Edit: Mandatory pic of said $4000 closed headphone + Pic of $12,000 open headphone

You would not be asking for the best headphones if you had any idea what the answer would bring.

You can't afford it, so I'm not even gonna list it. Just buy whatever you can buy from best buy and be satisfied.
