Best headphones for travel (jvc vs. sony)

Ive never used any of them or seen them in person but from the photos the JVC HAS700 looks to be the most comfortable

Monoprice has a solid pair of headphones (8323) for $22 or so. Based on everything I've read about them (on Head-Fi, Innerfidelity, CNet, etc.), they're some of the best you can get for the price. Comfort over a few hours seems to be a common complaint, though.

I have the MDR NC7 and I do not find them that comfortable but that's imo. They were replacements for a Maxwell over the ear model that never worked right and it was too late to return them (the Maxwell). If I had to make a choice, I'd go with an over the ear model.

I paid only $17 for a refurbished pair of the Sony's at the local tigerdirect/compusa. You might want to check them out there if you have one near you.

Also, the HAS700 and HAS600 are just OK for travel. They fold up nicely but they don't keep much outside noise out. Certainly not terrible, but I have to crank them up to drown out subway noise.

I have the HAS700 and do not like it. It looks nice, but the sound is very hollow. Oddly, the step down unit (HAS600b) sounds much better - it uses a much better driver and rivals headphones costing $75-100.

A great value at $30

Thanks, I did end up getting the HAS600B. I ran into a review that pointed out the same thing you did, and then based on that looked at comparisons between the two and it was pretty unanimous that the 600 was much better. The consensus is that the numbering scheme throws people off so the 600 is overlooked.

Good for you - they're great bang for buck headphones. If those don't work out the monoprice set mentioned above is waiting for me at home (just got them) - I'll report back if you're still in the market. I doubt they'll be as comfortable and portable as the has600bs though.
