2.) Samsung 42" Widescreen Digital-Cable-Ready DLP Rear-Projection HDTV with HDMI Input - Silver

Is the LCD considered better? Any advice on which one to choose?
Did you go and look at them yourself? The reason I ask, is that some people, like myself suffer from seeing rainbows when viewing DLP sets. It very distracting, and can make some people sick to their stomach.

I was watching the Samsung 42" DLP for $1599 today at best buy and was stunned. The PQ is so awesome. If I was in the market for a television like that I'd get it for sure.

Dunno if it's worth it though. (Not likely from this site, but this TV)
At 37", I'm not sure if you will notice much of a difference between 720p & 1080P.

just like I won't notice and upgrade from a 17" 1280X1024 LCD to a 20.1" 1600X1200 LCD? right....
Not the same thing!!! You are increing the size of your screen, so of cource you are going to notice a change. If you want to see what I mean, Go here and download one of these that are in both 720p & 1080p. Watch them both on your 17", report back, then watch them again on your 20.1". Let me know what you think.

I am a distributor rep for LG - and I concur about rear projojection. There are three types of rear projection that are popular now. One is on the way out. The other two will end up in a battle for second place behind plasma. One may disappear - eventually.
1) CRT - the oldest type that used to be 4x3 format and has now gone wide screen. This is the one that will go first. Lg does not make one at all - except in it's Zenith line.
2) LCD - the larger size LCD's are rear projection with a single light engine, with one lamp. Except for one built by RCA that is about 8" thick, and hangs on the wall - the other popular makes are 14 - 16" thick and set on a stand - to my knowledge.
3) DLP - rear projection - 14- 16" thick - on a stand. DLP used to be only in expensive projectors. Texas Instruments developed new technology that brought it to the masses in the form of a less expensive rear projo.

The top players with the best quality are LG (shameless plug), Mitsubishi, and Sony & Pioneer. There are many other good sets, but I think these to be the best. There are some that are less than that from what the service reps say - Magnavox, Panasonic, RCA.

In a week or so - the prices should start to drop. There may be some real downward movement on LCD, and there might be some downward movement on plasma. It won't be as much though.

One of the best buys to be had out there - soon or now - will be a 42" ED plasma from Zenith. If you get the current model that is now being replaced - you get LG's last year technology, and it should be at a really good price. Should be less than 2K. The 42" ED that we are replacing that set with now has both tuners, 5000 to 1 brightness, and 60K life expectency (over 20 years at 8 hours a day). It is LG all the way - just does not have LG's two year P&L warranty.

Be blessed in your quest!

How funny - the one brand missing from your list is SAMSUNG - Lucky Goldstar's (or LG's) chief Korean competitor, who consistently ranks much higher than LG in head to head consumer reports.

How did that happen, that they got left off, hmmmm...

I should have mentioned Samsung. They are actually a really good manufactuer. I would choose them over many of the others.

All you have to do is have a good long talk with a place that specializes in high end home theatre installs. There are a few installs that are even above the Pioneer Elites', Sonys' and LGs' of the world - some are pretty esoteric. When you get hold of one that knows what LG is doing in this area, you quickly become aware of the direction they are headed. Pioneer Elite has held an edge in this type of store (for that type of set) but LG is really making some heads turn with warranty - but more than that the features that lend itself to a cleaner install.

What I was addressing was the sets that you can find in Best Buy, Circuit City - etc. You can find many of the same brand sets that your better home theatre installers use here. I have yet to see a Samsung in one of these home install stores. Does not mean they are not a good set. They are just not going after that market - yet.

One side note. Circuit City and the like do not always have the best value. Many smaller mom an pop stores can give a price just as good - and with usually better and more personable service.

I think the feds have made up thier mind, and are requiring all sets above 36" to install both tuners. I am pretty sure this is accurate now - and it should show up on the new models that we will see this last quarter.

Don't mean to hijack the original thread, but didn't want to create one that was nearly identical (and figured the deal gurus out there could update us on the latest after-Xmas uber-deals).

Price target for me is $1500-2000. Sitting about 12 ft away in a family room, four windows but not bright or direct daylight (it's the shady side of the house). Completely agnostic on technologies and space is not an issue, I could even fit a big-ass CRT in the appointed spot. I'm not a huge TV watcher but useage would be about evenly split between normal tv programming (with whatever shows are HD) and DVD watching, once a year or so my nephew will come by with his game system and play some Mario Kart or something but that would be less than 1% of the useage. Willing to do minor maintenance (like change a bulb every blue moon) but basically want a "set it up and don't fvck with it ever again" set.

This is intended to be a replacement for an ancient 27" Magnavox set which has finally bit the dust.
