Which is the best make and model for a high end RAID configuration: 7200RPM and is >60GB? Which have you had problems with? (I have heard that Maxtor has a lot of problems)

Seagate!!!! I love the Barracuda IV. It's a 60GB 7200RPM drive. I just have it as a single drive configuration so I have no idea how it performs in a RAID configuration, but I'm pretty sure it'll work fine. Hope this helps.

I've never had a problem w/ Maxtor, and if you should, their Customer Service is fantastic (so i hear) Seagate is also excellent. I have seen and heard some negatives about IBMs newer drives, but their older drives used to be among the best.

Do you have any good Maxtor drives to recommend?

Here is the link to the bad stuff on Maxtor (no offense to anybody): Link

Somebody else will have to confirm it but the Seagates aren't suppost to do well in RAID. I have one myself and love it but its not in RAID.

My Maxtor drives take a lickin and keep on tickin....nothin but Maxtor!!!

IBMs used to be the ish untill all these 75GXP probs (did they ever own up to that?)

Western Digitals used to be somewhat decent...every1 that I've had always developed bad sectors. Their RMA policy is pretty good...they sent me a drive back about 3 weeks after i sent it off.

Seagates....i dunno too much about, but I know that my friend has done a few RMAs with them (unfortunately) but in return has received drives larger than what he sent out (fortunately).

No offense taken here :D, the date on that article is Thursday Sep 23, 1999, thats a longgg time when comparing hardware. Maxtor has come a long way since then.

WTF, that article is dated way back in 1999!!! They have since acquired Quantum in 2000( Or was it 2001?) The drives they make now are awesome and FAST.

I second the suggestion for D740x. I have a friend who use it and it's FAST. :) Quiet too.

well, these days since Quantum and Maxtor just merged, you may get a Quantum hard drive in a maxtor box. I've seen that happen frequently recently.

The IBM Drives especially the 60GXP and 75GXP are having a lot of problems right now, and reports are coming in of them dropping like flys.

Western digital are good drives, no complaints there.

and as for the Seagates........I love mine. It's a lot faster in benchmarks than my Maxtor, and it's almost totally silent. Can't go wrong with those. They've even got a metal protective plate over the electronics!

I'm scared to buy a Maxtor now b/c of the whole Quantum thing....I never really kept up with Quantum so I never paid attention to how good they are. I know I hated their Bigfoot drives that came in older Compaqs.

I know that the D740X is a Quantum drive too...probably not a bad thing though.

Sorry about the article, but I have always had some certain something against Maxtor. I have heard from a lot of my friends that they run into a lot of problems and that they are too loud. (I am not trying to flame)

The Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB is running about $30.00 cheaper than it's WD counterpart: WD800BB, and it is probably the best HD, performance-wise, in that range. Does anybody want to second my motion? :)

And can you find out if Seagate really sucks at RAID configs? I hope that you know that Seagate manufactures HDDs for servers with RAID configs. For example, Cheetah X15.

There were some known problems with the barracuda IV running RAID. I've read it somewhere around the forums. Try doing a search. If you want a reliable RAID. Stop at nothing but SCSI.

Personaly i think WD drives suck, though thier customer service is great, which is a good thing as often as i have had to RMA them.
I have had no problems with any of the Maxtor or IBM drives i have ever owned (though i never had a 75GXP)
Go with the Maxtor or the Seagate, you will probably be happiest with one of those.

Best harddrive? How about a Segate Fireball... lol :D

I really like Maxtors. IBM has left a sour taste in my mouth...but I'm tempted by the 120GXP. I haven't used WD in a while so I can't really comment on them.

<< high end RAID configuration >>

You mean like RAID 5 ????????

Are you just talking about IDE RAID 0 ????

If so, you can get 2 WD1200JB or 2 WD1000JB-SE HDs.

if you want a serious raid config them go with SCSI. If you are just playing with raid IDE is fine.

Maxtor WD and seagate are all fine now. Maxtor has made big improvements on their drive since 99. 3 years is a very long time and their drives are very quiet now.

My IBM 60GXP died on me, which was a shame as it is quick and quite. Using a Maxtor D740X and it is great, no problems yet and its cheap - can't go wrong with this baby!!

If you got cash definitely SCSI especially in a RAID array - it will fly.

I think you mean IBM which have had some reliability problems anyway go Maxtor D740X it`s fast and quiet also 7200rpm & ATA-133 as well which is no big deal over ATA-100 but nice to have.

I switched from IBM to Maxtor because of hearing too many problems with some IBM models and have been happy so far.

I read an article about that (I think it was in Maximum PC). The way I remember it, Maxtor will honor the warranty if you get a Quantum drive in a Maxtor box.
I have 2 45GB 75GXP's. Never had a single glitch with either. I've also used WD's over the years. The only drive I ever had a failure on was a Seagate. That doesn't make me think "all Seagate's suck!". It just failed. Oh well. Every manufacturer has parts that fail. It's how they handle it that matters to me. Seagate was great. In fact, I just bought another Seagate to use for video storage.

DocSmarts, even the best drive will not withstand getting pitcher of water poured over or ran over with bulldozer.
