95 percent of the singers mentioned in this thread are not hard rock/heavy metal.

The original poster had some great picks. I would have to go with:

Geoff Tate - Queensryche
Bruce Dickinson - Iron Maiden

& my favorite metal singer of all time:

Ronnie James Dio

That guy is pushing 60 now and he still sounds better than ever. His shows are amazing and his vocal range hasn't diminished one bit. There are so many classic songs of his: Last in Line, Holy Diver, Children of the Sea, Rainbow in the Dark, We Rock, Heaven and Hell.....etc,etc

Dio++

How could I forget him?

In that vein, Hansi Kürsch is awesome as well. Blind Guardian's version of "Don't talk to strangers" rivals the original.
Hansi rules! 🙂

You should know of Matt Barlow from Iced Earth if you know BG.

All have been mentioned already, but: Maynard James Keenan / Chino Moreno / Chris Cornell / Layne Staley.

I would have to say without a doubt Grahm Bonnet Owns them all. Evers since he was in Rainbow I thought he had the best hard rock voice evar

(you gotta kind be old like me to know who he is)

Lemmy 😛
I love Motorhead, but if i had to pick one singer it would have to be Rob Halford.

Hard to argue with most of the names mentioned so far though.

You're kidding, right? I love Motorhead, but Lemmy's not the greatest vocalist.

How about David Byron of Uriah Heep?

Gonna have to go with Bruce Dickinson, but I'm the first to admit Im biased, seeing as Maiden has been my fav band since I was 6 years old 😛

Geoff Tate, Dio, Tarja Turunen, Russel Allen, and Michael Kiske kick ass all over the place as well.

Singers I like, not cause of their good voice in itself, but cause it fits perfectly with the bands they play/have played with:
Eric Adams (Manowar)
Axl Rose (Guns 'N Roses)
Sebastian Bach (Skid Row -Subhuman Race)
James Hetfield (Metallica -StAnger)
Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian)
Joacim Cans (Hammerfall)
Henrik Brockmann (Royal Hunt)

1. Robert Plant (he's in a league of his own.. no competition)

2. Ozzy Osbourne

3. Axl Rose (probbaly best dissonant voice ever)

Mike Patton from Mr. Bungle/Faith No More has one of the best voices I have ever heard. He is the most talented vocalist of my generation.

Guyz guyz guyz...*tsk tsk tsk*

Here's my list (in no particular order):
a) James Hetfiel
I know some ppl think otherwise but...

b) Serj Tankian
I dun believe that in the whole 85 posts to date, he's only mentioned once. When I first heard prison song on cd, i thought soad were had 4 singers...wuz wondering if the drummer sang. And if u listen to it properly, it does have 4 completely different voices. 2 of them belong to serj and 2 to the guitarist. His voice is really too good.

c) Axl Rose
Ppl, the guy is a classic. Sweet child o mine? November rain? Knockin' on heavens door? Hello? Have we all forgotten the past?

d) Anthony {Something}
From the chillis. I know he's not hard rock/metal but I thought it's worth mentioning. And I find it interesting he, too, is missing in the 85 posts. Some of the chilli's old stuff are SOOO hard to sing, it's not funny.

Ah, crap. So many good vocalists. I'm gonna have to make my combined list.

Again, in no particular order

Robert Plant
Jack Russell (BUT ONLY because he's the only person I've ever heard who can imitate Robert Plant flawlessly)
James Hetfield (in the '83 - '99 year range)
Ronnie James Dio
Maynard James Keenan
Freddie Mercury (Classically trained++)
Hansi Kürsch (because he can scream WITH CLASS)
James Labrie (master of vocal emotion, should get a nobel peace prize for his work on Metropolis Part II)
Russel Allen
Mike Patton (high notes, low notes, funk, or straight vocals - This man is GAWD)
Bruce Dickinson
Brandon Boyd (just listen to "Summer Love" and "A Certain Shade of Green")
Geoff Tate

Okay. I think that list is my complete list. Think. Yeah. For now.

good calls imo

i would add Lajon Witherspoon from Sevendust
EDIT: and mike patton (but only in fnm's: king for a day fool for a lifetime) /EDIT

i love how Serj Tankian plays with his voice, in some song i'm just laughing.
i love how Matt Holt's voice draws beautiful pictures with his voice and 2 seconds later it rains hell on earth, just love it😀

OP asked for the "best" vocalist, not your favorite. You can be a fan of Chino or Fred Durst, but they are not the best. My favorite band is Metallica, but I'm the first to admit that James is not a very talented singer. Geoff Tate, on the other hand, was classically trained for opera (both parents were opera singers). I think music today has gone away from talent and techinque. It's funny to hear people say, "He's a talented growler..." 😕
