Best hard drive storage solution?

How should I go about with the storage in my box? Should I get a Raptor for windows and programs, and then 2-500gb Harddrives in raid 0?

or should I just use the 2-500gb hard drives in raid 0 and then partition it for the windows installation?

Would there be much performance differences between them?
 
Avoid RAID 0 - it is a foolish option. If you must have RAID, gor RAID 1 or RAID 5.

The smartest options you've posted are...

Better would be a Raptor for your OS and 2 x Caviar RE2 WD7500AYYS 750GB in RAID 1 for storage.
The Raptor and the RE2 drives have a 5 year warranty and MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures), of 1.2 million hours.
The RE2 HDs also feature TLER (Time-Limited Error Recovery), to add stability in a RAID environment.

 
i' think a good storage solution would be 2 x raptors in raid 0 + 2 x ___GB 7200.11's (OR WD) in Raid 0... although i've never had a hdd fail on me in the past 5 years or so...

Simplest is to purchase a $99 500GB HDD, and put your OS and apps on it, in one partition, and be happy. Is there a specific reason you want to do something other than that?

yea because thats dangerous and annoying when u want to reformat.
and its also slightly faster if u have a dedicated hdd for OS/APP's that isn't really cluttered with media files

Gotcha. I use Windows Home Server, running in a VM, for my redundancy needs. It backs up everything, so if I lose a disk on a computer, I just boot from CD, connect to the WHS via gigabit network, and kick off a restore then and there.
 
os partition always, as said, easier format/image restore
don't do raid for storage unless its mirror..unless you want double the chance of failure..and even if you have backups restoring data for 1tb of disc is...a freakin chore! lol🙂
 
I was wondering if someone could review this forum post and give your opinion on it.

The one im really keyed in on is the 12th post down. It talks about using 3 SATA II HD's in Raid 0 rather than raptor drives. Is this accurate? I've gone back and forth on Raptors vs the newer SATA II hd's.
