Best Hard Disk Brand

Hi, I would like to get a hard disk for my desktop and I see deals of hard drive from different manufacturers. Just wonder which one is the best? Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor and Hitachi? They ran about the same price but I could not decide which one to get! I am trying to get the IDE 7200rpm 8m cache version. Thanks.

LOL.. my cat did both of those while I was doing something.. sorry bout that.

Anyways.. yeah with the hard drives, I have used Western Digitial, Maxtor, and Seagate.

So far my Seagate and WD have worked the best.. my Maxtor died but Maxtor sucks.

Seagate or WD... but get a Seagate if you can. Things never break!

I've had Seagate, Maxtor, and WD.

Maxtor's been going strong for almost three years now.
WD died in six months.
The Seagate's are the next brand I'm testing.

Guess which ones I'm in favor of?

Which ever's on sale and cheapest at time of purchase. I clone the OS HD after installation w/ a 2nd HD, and backup crucial files to DVD.

maxtor has done fine with me so far,
WD no problems.. at least for now

Whatever it is, don't get an IBM deskstar , or its HITACHI now

I've used WD exclusively for the last several years with great success. I Currently have 4 of them running at home with no problems. The oldest one is about 3 1/2 years.
I have built 8-10 rigs for my friends and family in the last 3yrs all using WD, and all currently running without a hitch.

As another poster said, any of the drives from major makers will be fine. All of them will occasionally ship a bad one, stuff happens

so many mixed comments and I guess I asked a stupid question =P

There's no for sure good brand, just based on experience!

yeah individual experience
there is always going to be a percentage of drives that are defective..
just a matter of which hands it went to

Listen to the father of guitars. He speaks wisdom.

Man, this is like the 3rd or 4th thread I've seen in the last couple of weeks regarding this subject.

Anyway, with the exception of IBM "Deathstars", I've never had any issues with any of the top brands. I've gone through numerous (hundreds actually) Maxtors, WDs, and Seagates over the years. This includes not only private use, but at work and also for the machines we supply our numberous clients. Sure, there could be a dud or two, but it's not inherent to any particular brand. It could happen to any of them.

There WAS a span of time when an entire production batch of WD 40gigers seemed to die prematurely, but WD seemed to have worked that out. My current favorites are the 16mb cache Maxtors which seem to be the best combination of speed and noise.

Any HD manufacturer will be good, but there are bad drives from all of them. I would simply say Seagate because they have a 5 year warrantee instead of 3 year.

A few years ago I had a few Maxtor drives fail on me at work. But that was a while ago.

I've always used Western Digital drives in my home PC. They've given me no problems, so I'm likely to stick with the brand.

Seagate or WD

^^Best brands out there.

Maxtor has a record for instability. Yes, you could have a drive that is running fine, however they have a high faliure rate.

Samsung quiet, rivals the best Seagates, however not a huge warranty, and generally not as fast.

Seagate: Silent, fast, huge warranty. They are said to run hot, but mine runs no hotter than my WD drive.

WD- The equivelent of the Energizer battery. They just keep going. Lifespan and build quality is incredible. Not as good warranty as seagate. Fast, and due to lack of fluid bearings emits a high pitched whine.... noisier than all other makers.
