Ralph Machio!!! LOL, wasn't that Steve Vai with him in that movie?

Russ, I would give you a 10 now but it appears your user rating thingy is turned off ;)

Some other great guitarists mentioned here!!! I totally forgot about Chet Atkins, Les Paul and Steve Morse.

I just remembered another that you all must listen to to believe!

Stanley Jordan!!!!, the man with two left hands ;)

I have to say John Petrucci is the most amazing guitarist I've ever seen. I noticed mucman is the only other person to mention him, and I dig Rush pretty hardcore, too! In fact, I believe Rush and Yes were both big influences on DT.

Can't say that I'm much into guitar music, but right now I'm listening to Gary Moore - The Loner and it's a really sweet track.

My favorite guitarist is Ted Green. If you have to ask who he is, ask almost any famous guitarist. He's a renowned teacher and author of many guitar books. I've had the pleasure of seeing him play over the years. :D

Another favorite is Stanley Jordan. Anyone who can play chord lead, chord rhythm and walking bass at the same time, on one guitar, is simply amazing! He turns up the volume, and finger taps on the fretboard with both hands, like a keyboard player. It's a technique he carried over from studying with Emmett Chapman who invented the "stick." The musical effect is stunning. :D

What??? You've never seen anyone playing the stick? You're in for another treat, some day. :)

Petrucci!!!

Although Lifeson is extremely underrated!

Don't know why Bassists can't be guitarists...It is a bass "guitar" afterall.

I think Geddy and Les Claypool would be good no matter which one they used.

Rush rules...to bad the best songs (Cygnus X-1, Fountain of Lamenth, Natural Science) never make it to the radio.

I can't believe I forgot Andres Sergovia, thanks for reminding me Lidless Eye!

Kaalot, I remember reading an interview with Petrucci and he said is was influence by the Steve and Als of the guitar world :) : Stevie Ray Vaughn, Steve Vai, Steve Howe, Alex Lifeson, Allan Holdsworth.

Harvey, Stanley Jordan is one of those players you have to see/hear to believe. Someone told me that he played the bass, rythym and the solo of Stairway to Heaven on one guitar all at the same time!!! I would love to hear that!

Wallysaurus, that dude from Rush is Alex Lifeson ;)

I must add the guitarist from Marillion too! The name escapes me right now though; is it Hogarth? Or is that the lead singer?

I am glad to see so many people with an eye for talent on the forums... at least this isn't another boy band debate thread ;)

BDawg, I totally agree! It's too bad some of Rush's best songs aren't the ones that get regular airplay. Cygnus X-1 is the most terrifying song! Those 3 chords that are played at the end of the song just grab me for some reason (or it could be Geddy hitting one of his highest scream near the end ;).

Jimi Hendrix.

There is no one that can even compare to his ability. He did things with strings that other's couldn't do with 4 hands.

ummm, i got here late, so basically the guys that others have mentioned, but i also want to throw in J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. fame. he wasn't that great of a singer but he was amazing on the guitar. if you want proof, download (for evaluation purposes of course) a song called Maggot Brain from the album "Mike Watt: Ball-Hog or Tugboat?" Mike Watt is a well-respected but under-appreciated bassist from the bands Firehose and Minutemen. he cut a record with a whole bunch of "alternative" musicians a couple years back, one track with Mascis. that song is twelve minutes of freestyle guitar backed by bass and organ. writing that just now made it sound really out there, but the song is amazing.
