Best GLide wrapper??

So I've rekindled my love for the Jane's simulation games (PM if you have any of the games I listed in the FS/T forum) and the only one I've gotten a hold of so far is F-15.

This game is GLide native, but with a patch supports D3D. Problem is, the game crashes when I try and load up a mission in D3D mode. 2D looks like crap, but I downloaded the first GLide wrapper I googled and the game looks beautiful in GLide mode, but the cockpit is all corrupted and any external views such as chase or weapon view results in freezes, screen corruption and eventual crashes if I dont change back to the cockpit view.

After further research I found that there are dozens of different GLide wrappers. I was just wondering if you guys had any experience with these things and if so, which one works the best?

Thanks.

There isn't a best glide wrapper unfortunately. Use the one that give best results for the game you wish to play. If another game doesn't work well with it, just use a different wrapper for that game.

Voodoo (insert highest number here you can get) FTW!

Ebay of FS/FT is the best bet. Heck, get a whole 98 machine going, it should be cheap to do (less than $200) fun, and you actually will have some decent drivers to choose from... just stick to DX7 for best results, I never had much luck after installing DX8 on the ol' Gateway...

:)

I use my voodoo3 3000 in my nforce3 mobo and directx9 works good. maybe its because its a newer chipset. all the old games work like they should in glide though. i just need to find a good p3 and find out what the best mobo is and get an aureal soundcard. btw the best 3dfx card actually released (not prototype) is the voodoo5 5500.

Nice, are you using hacked out xp/2000 drivers or are you running 98?

I use 98 and the latest offical drivers. I dont use my voodoo3 all the time, though. Usually I leave my 6600gt in there and pop in the v3 and a 98 hard drive when I want to play some glide games.

I have a p3 800 system that I am thinking about getting a V5 5500 for, but this is only for one game people. The girlfriend would have my nuts on a platter if I got that old p3 800 up and running.

Who knows, I might do it anyway cause every wrapper I have tried either sucks or doesnt work at all.

I remember it because it;s the very first component in a PC that ever died on me. I replaced it with a Voodoo3 2000 which I still have in the attic. I might just sling it into my Compaq AP550 (Dual P3, 1GB PC-800) and see if I got any Glide games to run on it.

Wasn't Turok a Glide game?

Perfect. Keep in mind a Voodoo3 3000 would also do the trick, but you might actually get some FSAA with the 5, I don't really remember... and getting a 98 machine up and running is fun. It will remind you how much better XP is and how little of a step up vista is in comparison. ;)

SonicIce, that is pretty sweet :)

V5 would give you better framerates in general and 32bit color in games (i think). FSAA would only be useful for really old games because it really kills the framerate on these old cards. it uses supersampling if i remember.

Glide itself was limited to 16bit colour.

You are re-kindingling some old fond memories from the Jane Sim era! Funny that I still have a PCI Creative 3D Blaster Banshee! I hop to find the answer on the wrapper too!

I always wanted to build up an old 98 box to play ATF and Fighters Anthology on. Those were some seriously kick-ass arcade sims. I had so much fun on my old K6-2 350 shooting down soviet strategic bombers in my F-22...

Ahh the days :)

I also had a Voodoo3 2000 PCI - the first aftermarket part I ever put inside a computer. I was 14 years old, and I remember shaking and sweating uncontrollably as I put it into my PCI slot, sure that I was going to destroy the computer :). Luckily for me everything worked, and I jumped into Rouge Squadron 3D, and all of a sudden had silky smooth graphics at 800x600 with Glide, whereas before my ATi Rage Pro 4 MB was a slideshow at 640x480 in d3d. That was seriously the coolest upgrade ever. Nothing has come remotely close for me. That got me started in this whole world, now I do this stuff for a living :D

Good memories folks!
