No? It's an amusing question, even if it doesn't matter in the end. I'll up the ante, and change it to "Who's the best black singer". That should take a little more thought ;^)

I think I'll go with Marvin Gaye, but It's close with several singers, and I'm sure I'm forgetting someone.

Sam Cooke and Nat King Cole come immediately to mind.

Jackie Wilson also had immense respect as a performer from his peers.

K.D. Lang is suppose to be pretty good.

Otherwise, Ricky Martin?

Good choices, but how do you even define good? Howlin' Wolf, and Louis Armstrong are both great, but not in a technical way.

Billie Holiday was in my mind also. I was looking on NPR's site awhile ago for something, and I saw a short article on Billie Holiday. It mentioned how much she admired Louis Armstrong, and how much of her style was derived from him. That blew my mind. I NEVER noticed it until I read that, but sure as shit, her singing is VERY close to Louis' . Maybe I'm just thick but check it out if you never noticed. It's amazing and cool :^)

I'm with you all the way on these choices. Both Louie and Billie (not to exclude Howlin') are giants atop their own mountains, no one can reasonably deny.

Once you start reflecting and having singers you'd completely missed shot back at you, you realize how insane and essentially pointless it is to summarily name ONE the best of all time.

I'm just tickled pink that these deservedly legendary artist's names are at all being put before a general audience (OT) that may not know them well at all.

If just one Justin Beiber fan gets opened up to even one of the greats who came before, lx, our work here will not have been in vain. :p

K.D. Lang is a good singer, but nowhere near the level that Freddie Mercury was. It needs to be established is bi is gay enough to make the list, if not than Freddie and Elton are disqualified. Halford, ...good singer but if Freddie and Elton are counted than it's over for him.

Nobody has mentioned the dude from Depeche Mode???....

Depeche Mode doesn't have any gay members, a bit femmy yes, but gay no...

3 out of the 4 original members are currently married to women. The other guy I didn't even bother to look up.
