Hi I need to replace my mouse and I've been told that I should stay with a regular 3 button mouse and not to
go with an "optical" mouse.

I am a gamer - Unreal Tournament - I was told that an optical will not work well if you have to raise and lower the mouse
during a game.

I curently am using a Logitech S48 - 3 button mouse

Would appreciate your opinions - would like to stay with a Logitech product.

Thanks

or

you can get a razor boomslang
if you don't want optical

but i'll recommend the mx 700 or 500

Can't go wrong with an Intellimouse Explorer 3.0. its accurate and fast as it takes sample rates at 6,000 responses per second .

The current generation of optical devices do not suffer from the problems that the first optical mice had. It sounds like the individual that did told you not to go with an optical mouse has not used some of the newest from MS and Logitech.

I had the first optical mouse made by Logitech (the Mouseman with the blue light), and it was nothing like my new Logitech MX500. It skipped frequently, was too heavy, and did not track correctly sometimes. I was turned off from optical mice after this earlier experience, but my last two mice have been LT opticals and I love them.

I agree with Platinum....go with the MX500. However, I'd recommend that you try it before you buy. It is a little larger than my previous dual optical Mouseman and I am still getting used to it.

Actually I have heard of gamers complaining of the MX700 being abit sluggish for gaming. If he did want to go wireless and optical then I might recommend the newest Microsoft mouse, the Intellimouse Explorer for Bluetooth.

"Not only is the mouse accurate and snappy, but it also supports a response time for serious gamers of nearly 9,000 samples per second."....

Hmmm not what I read
Bluetooth is designed for personal-area-network convenience, not avid gamers; the technology's peak data-transfer rate is about 1Mbps, and Microsoft doesn't claim the new mouse can match the response time of its 27MHz model or the touted, fast-enough-for-fragfests speed of Logitech's new MX700 Cordless Optical Mouse. The Bluetooth mouse was perfectly fine and stumble- or skip-free in everyday use -- if you stick to Excel and PowerPoint rather than Unreal Tournament, you'll be fine -- but we experienced just a few hiccups when we whipped it across the desk as fast as we could.

Link .

I think Logitech MX500 or Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer or Optical V3 are best choices.

I read that review before purchasing my Wireless Optical Desktop for Bluetooth, and do not agree with it. I play a lot of games that require fast mouse movement, and have not had my mouse skip on me once. I can tell you first hand that the Wirelss Intellimouse Explorer for Bluetooth is much better than the Wireless Intellimouse Explorer. It has not been sluggish on me once.

It may be better then it`s wireless Intellimouse Explorer brother, but I would still recommend the (corded ) Logitech MX500 or (corded) Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer/Optical V3 unless he wants cordless.

Happy owner of two Boomslang 2000s here, although I hear a number of good things about this generation of optical mice. Nothing like fraggin' with a sturdy Razer though.

Razers are easily the best ball mice out there IMO, but mine were unreliable as hell. Fortunately both of mine were free. I've since moved to a Logitech mouseman dual optical and it's excellent. FWIW I've hated all generations of MS optical mice.

MX500 feels right.. Microsoft Intellipoint software is better than Logitech's MouseWare.. can't go wrong with an MX500/700 or an Intellimouse Optical/Explorer.

I love my Logitech MX700...it's a bit expensive but worth it IMO. There is no skipping or such with it.

I want to thank everyone who replied to my post.

You cleared up my confusion on why opinions varied on whether optical
mice were good for gaming.

Money is tight right now, so I'm leaning toward the MX500, I'll check out the feel of it next time I am at BestBuy or CompUSA.

If that doesn't feel right I'll check out the MX300.

Thanks again for your advice.

I'm using a 3 button logitech FirstMouse myself for gaming, and a MS Intellimouse Optical for other usage. Sounds counterintuitive I know, but that's how I work. If they made an Optical 3 button mouse w/o the wheel I'd buy it in a jiffy. I just can't stand the scroll wheel for gaming.

You were probably told optical mice were not good for gaming because of a common problem they used to have: if you were to move the mouse too quickly, the cursor would go haywire. Newer optical mice do not suffer from this problem. That is mostly because current optical mice take more pictures per second. I have an Intellimouse Explorer, and my girlfriend has a wireless optical Logitech mouse (Don't know the model, sorry). I prefer the Intellimouse Explorer.

I sincerely recommend the Microsoft Intellimouse Optical (5 button) NON EXPLORER MODEL

It's white and symmetrical in shape good for left and right handers
The retail edition has the new curcuitry which is 6000 samples a second (you can't skip it 100% impossible)
It's cheap (less than 35$ US in retail I'd think)

the 5 buttons are perfect in shape and location and it's not big and bulky like other explorer models (they suck - totally massive, difficult to game with)

Take it, from an owner of an MX700 (useless to me, fun for windows, but I'll never use it in games) - I've owned many mice over the last 14 years of PC gaming, I'd say at least 25 mice - ball mice suck - boomslang or not, opticals are fine now, don't waste your money on a mouse which is known to break down frequently.

The MS explorers are very large, although some people love them - if you use NON airplane controls in games (quake) - you can't rocket jump with the mice as it hits the back of your hand (hard to explain)

The MX700 is bad due to WEIGHT and button placement - therefore I wouldn't recommend the MX500 either.

It also depends how seriously you take your gaming and if it's for competition.

I agree with that statement sir...I just picked up the MX500 and I don't like the feel of it and it's heavier than my previous mouse,I'll be returning it.

I'm wondering if the MX300 is lighter,if not,I may just try the Microsoft Intellimouse Optical that you mentioned.

I'm going to have to recommend this as well. the Logitech are built alot nicer, and feel alot better, but when it comes to being satisified about the performance the MS mouse just works.. the Logitech mouseware sucks bag, and just doesnt' cut it in comparison to the MS software... the Intellimouse is better for gamers because it actually works.

the Logitech mice are however incredibly nice for office use, or light gaming that does not require use of all the buttons on the mouse.
like the MX500 which is the same as the MX700 except it's cable instead of cordless (i like cords alot more)

surprising to see someone agree, I was expecting fanboys trying to justify their purchase hounding me with insults :)
I bought one too - I was stupid too :) - but unlike most I'll happily admit it.

It's a cool mouse.
It's just not for the hardcore gamer.

Mouse decisions, such a tough war for gamers. Ok, here's my take on it:

I have the Logitech Dual Optical, Logitech MX500 and the MS Intellimouse 3.0. My day to day mouse for work is the MS and the MX500 just replaced the dual optical for my main machine (when at home). So far, I have no complaints about either of the mice. As far as tracking goes, they are all the same (playing Counter-Strike to Soldier of Fortune 2 and Rocket Arena 3). For comfort, I prefer the Logitechs, especially the newer MX500 -- its ligher than the dual optical.

Wireless for a gaming mouse = low sampeling rate
low sampeling rate = not as smooth movement
not as smooth movement = you getting fragged

Mx500 don't go wireless:)
just my .02

It might be good if you read some reviews before spouting your opinion.

The MX700 is the first mouse which has 125hz radio frequency, effectively making it as fast as a cabled mouse.
(I for one can not tell the difference smoothness wise between an MS intellimouse (series 2, 6000 sample) and this mouse - at ALL)

I like my IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0. Works great on games. So my recommendation goes to that. I've tried a few Logitech optical mice before (not the mx500 and 700...ones before) and I didn't like 'em that much. Drivers aren't as good, and I like the weight of the IntelliMouse.
