Yeah, I know it's not much, but there must be some decent ones out there for this much. And would it be better if I custom it? Any help would be appreciated. Links would be especially helpful as well. Thanks to all that reply.

yeah, with that much cash you will want to build it yourself

what is your current rig? is there anything you can salvage from it? do you have your own copy of windows (if not it will suck if that cost is comming out of your 800)?

Honestly, your best bet at that price range is a 360. You can get 4 controllers and play with your friends as well as on Xbox Live. It's quite a decent deal.

Ichigo is probably right, unless you will have more cash in the future to dedicate to your rig. Or unless you can sell your old PC once you build a new rig. Or if you just want to learn how to build PC's because its fun :)

Also, how much is 800 Canadian in US $

you could try used, that would be a less expensive option that would allow you to buy a nicer rig than you could put together youself new.

AMD 3500+ for a whopping $130
939 mobo for $100 (there are cheaper, I'm shooting "average")
2x1024MB for $190
Sonata II case w/ PSU $110
250GB SATA2 HDD $100
7600 GS video card $170

At .89:1 we're talking $712.
The items you mentioned are actually cheaper today than even last week!
CPU $114
Mobos as you say can be had for less
RAM $160 for 2GB...
This is a good list!

the one i am in the process of building right now is around the same price as yours, comes to like 780$ i think.

and the pc will play almost all of the recent games, except for oblivion maybe, lol.

alot of people on here would say i am wrong, but i know im not, if i can play guild wars, UT2004, star wars galaxies, city of hero's/city of villains, and so on on my current dell 4500 with p4 2.0ghz, 768 ram, 40 gig HD, geforce 4 mx420 64 mb, then the pc i will build soon will be able to play all the new games, lol.

so yeah, you can build a good one for that price, sometimes you cant listen to people on the internet, the guys that say you need a 500$ video card to play world of warcraft, ROFL!

Make it a 7600GT for only $30 more, and you've got a pretty good budget rig there.

The OP never mentioned what hardware (and/or legit software) he may already have and can possibly reuse.

can you make it to a Fry's electronics on the US side of the border for the motherboard-CPU combo ?

they have some amazing bundles, for example 805 dual core (yes, it's intel) + ECS MB for $130 US ($143 canadian)

exchange rate this morning -
1.123

canadian computer websites -
frontierpc.com
anitec.ca
ncix.com

(i didn't mention future shop or tiger direct ... maybe they'd have a good price on a monitor)

Thanks to all that contributed. I probably will be customing it now that I see the advantages of that. I doubt there are many things that can be salvaged from my 10-year old PC that can't even run a 30-sec video without lagging except for an Azenram chip and a 160Gb harddrive. (You can probably see why I need a new computer)
Getting an OS won't be too much of a problem for me. So if anyone wants to help me with specific parts (I am really noob at this stuff) and give me a few pointers on how to custom that'd be appreciated.
And a few questions to leave off. Is AMD better than P4? Would it be better to order online or to go to a retail store, and if either, which places do you guys recomment?
I will probably delve into the $900 range if needed. If that frees up any thing good then please inform me.

Edit: oh and also please give advice on which video cards are good
