Best Gamepad?

Gamepad...FPS.... in the same sentence? Surely you jest... Mouse/Keyboard is the only way to play an FPS, but if you insist on a Gamepad, look at Microsoft's Dual-Strike controller. It's the next best thing to the mouse/keyboard combo

what he said

never, EVER, mix PC FPS with a gamepad.

but i'm curious about this too. What would be a really good general purpose gamepad that's easy on the wallet?
Could be good for emulation or some PC games i guess...

I cannot enjoy a FPS w/o a Gamepad.

That's the main reason I couldn't enjoy Unreal when it came out. It had no gamepad support.

I'm not into online PvP FPS. I can't move that fast. Constantly running = No Fun. I hated Quake 3.
(I really got my jollies from PC Quake 2 and Nintendo Quake tho)

My ideal FPS is single player with monsters you can stalk. I like to chose my position, aim, and take them out clean. Of course there is the excitement of the monsters that surprise you - that's fun too.

I like to have the whole world in my hands - a gamepad with all the buttons I need. Trying to find - and remember - buttons on the keyboard and move the mouse around at once.... it just aint confortable.

I know you can aim faster and more accurately with a mouse. I don't care. I don't want to have to aim.

I agree with you EyeOfThe. Dating back to the original Castle Wolfenstein, I never got comfortable playing FPS games with the mouse and keyboard. I got hooked on the original 4-button Gravis GamePad, and to this day, I refuse to play FPS games on the keyboard. Like you, I don't play online, and I could care less if the keyboard/mouse combo is more accurate. Having a gamepad in my hand is like having my trusty .270 rifle when I'm in the woods. It's what I've mastered.

Anyway, I currently use the Gravis Xterminator Digital Game Pad. You can actually set up the proportional directional pad to look around just like a mouse, and the normal analog d-pad to move forward/back/turn left/turn right. This is the only pad I've ever seen with one analog and proportional pad close to each other. Once I got used to this pad and the ability to add mouse look to it, it became the best pad I ever used. Gravis has moved on to other pads, so this might be hard to find nowadays. If you can get one, I think you'll love it. Good luck.
