So i might be moving into this place soon and before i do i wanna get a rough idea of where im gonna but my couches, tv, bed, desk, tables, etc. I have all the dimensions so if there was a program out there especially designed to do this it would make it alot easier

I was thinking i can just use the sims 2 and create the building and then try to roughly place furniture where i would have it in the new place.

Is there anything else out there that would work for this?

Depends on how much you want to spend but wouldn't it be easy enough to just draw a simple sketch?

I have seen programs out there and so far all of them suck. Thats why im asking here if theres anything better then the sims, as its been my best option so far.

What does it even have to do with being cheap anyway?

If you have The Sims 2 then I'd say go ahead and try that. There are many programs that do what you want. When people talk about cheap here they mean how much do you want to spend on the program? If you want something cheap maybe google for it and see what you can find free on the Net. I'm betting many free programs exist. The cheapest way, if you are buying, is probably the old graph paper and pencil and cut out some paper furniture to move around. I know its old fashion but sometimes old tech is best.

Edit: Also you may want to ask this question in the Software For Windows section. Cant hurt anyway. :)

Measure all of your stuff then take a pad of paper and a ruler. set a scale (1/4" = 1' works just fine)'. draw the outline of your room / rooms. Take another sheet of paper and make rectangles / shapes for your bed, desk chair etc and cut them out.

Place them over your first drawing and see what fits. easy

You can also download the latest version of AutoCad for a 30 day trial if you already know how to use it. If not, then I'd recommend BHG's Arrange-A-Room or Chief Architect.

So ALL the software out there, specifically designed to do this sucks more than using Sims 2? Yeah I think professional interior designers using Sins 2 all the time for such tasks

BHG's Arrange-A-Room is pretty cool [you have to sign up for a free account - and you can choose/deny a 1 year free subscription] and seems to cater to room design with pre-set furniture to drag/drop into place.

google's sketchup is awesome if you want to design your furniture...or just about anything else - sort of a simplistic version of autocad.
