for years i've used a WinZip/WinRar combo without giving much thought to it... but im noticing more and more freeware zip utilities and im wondering whether there is one that can do it all that is a worthy replacement...

built-in zip support in XP 🙂

Yeah, it's the best. 🙂

I don't find it adequate, although it's useful with a fresh install and you don't have another zip program yet.

I use WinZip at work and WinRAR at home. I've grown to like WinRAR a lot.

I love PowerArchiver. I liked it a little better when it was freeware, but I still bought a copy for each of my PCs. It rocks!

Edit: Ohhhh, freeware zipping/archiving software. D'oh. Would help to read the topic first! 🙂

lol too bad its not free i checked out the website and it looks pretty awesome! 🙂

I currently use IZarc, haven't used any of the others to be honest. IZarc seems sorta slow uncompressing RAR files, though I make that statement without really comparing it to other programs =) Maybe I'll look into 7-Zip. What are the advantages 7-Zip has over IZarc?

ZipGenius seems decent.

Agreed!...One of the best IMHO.

i just checked the website out... seems pretty solid and decent too... thing is i couldnt help notice that the install file was like 7.7 megs or something.... when you can get 7zip that has the same functionality at under 1mb im just skeptical as to whether the extras (if any) that zipgenius brings are worh the bloat...

I don`t find it bloated, it does have a very nice professional looking layout which probably increases the size of the program.I`ve been using it for over a year now, never had any problems.

Thanks. The reason I chose it is because I find that the files it produces is the most compatible across the systems of the people with whom I need to share these files. WinZip can produce files that are not extractable by the built-in Windows compression. The biggest driver for me is compatibility with my clients, not the quality of the compression.

fair enough! yeah with winzip and some others, depending on the compression method chosen it might not be compatible with other archiving software... i like the built in xp support its definitely useful but i still like having a 3rd party app.
