I tried Flashram's suggestions for Alzip and I think it's great! It might actually be better than winrar....

Version 6.11.x of PowerArchiver...nothing wrong with it in my oppinion!

But I admit that WinRAR is good also!

Winrar is not freeware.

Yeah. I'm looking for some freeware software. PowerArchiver 6.1 is getting old and has some problems with certain rar files. Maybe I'll just shell out $10 for UltimateZip. Thanks guys.

WinRAR is great... not bloated like winzip, and does both zip and rar compression...

Once I tried winRAR i never went back to winzip...

WindowsXP already has zip functionality built-in: archives are represented as folders. Opening up the folders reveals the files. Apparently, you don't like this feature. Personally, my preference is a slim context menu, so for all my compression programs, I put a shortcut in my send to folder. Hence, I can open a file by right-clicking/send to/zipgenius, winzip, winrar, and winace.

I usually set the context menus to "cascading" so my menu isn't bulked up.

WinRAR by far. It does everything, including extracting those self-extractors. *First program installed on my computer after any reformat

Total commander (windows commander)
It have internal zip,arj etc.
Could not stand Windows (file manager)
Of curse it´s not free, but you can look at it this way, you ger the zip for free when you get a new filemanager.
Once you try it, you can´t live whith out it.
Download it for try, here

Winrar is the best.

Technically shareware not freeware but still.

Stuffit and Alzip may claim to be able to read .RAR archives but if you use any of the advanced features like solid archiving or recovery blocks or multimedia compression then they fail.

Also Winrar has the 2nd best compression ratio and is reasonably fast. Uharc compresses a few percent tighter (MUCH less than the difference between rar and zip) but its SSSSSSLLLLLLOOOOOOWWWWWW
